Very true don't you agree?

The classic police attitude blend of arrogance, smug superiority and know it all would be criticized as being damagingly out of place and over-authoritarian if it were how a parent treated their ten year old child. Yet when personally faced with police officers we all find ourselves playing along with it. Why? Cos we know they can make life awkward for us. They can, on a whim, put us in a cell for 24 hours, raid our house and take anything they want away, or search our car. And that’s just the stuff they do that they’re entitled to do, before they go beyond the laws.

We all know this, and they know we know this, so we obey them and don’t object to their bias, vindictiveness, insults and bullying. They are not here to serve the law-abiding public. They are here to control us through our fear.

ustice, fairness, social cohesion, public safety; none of these are relevant to them. All that matters is that those at the bottom of the power structure do not challenge their position, and the police – individually and collectively – ensure their one-rung-up position is maintained.

Don't agree. There are a lot of police officers that put their lives on line everyday to make it safer to live for the rest of us, there are a lot of honorable police officers that were shot in the line of duty and just like fire fighters they do this without a substantial pay to compensate their sacrifices.

So, although there are some bad apples in every organization, I think over all they deserve a little more respect.

Remember during the Katrina hurricane, when the police weren't able to control a neighborhood, the first thing those people did was break the glasses of the shops and raid the goods, calling the DVD players they were stealing "public property".

They serve and protect us, don't let a few bad breeds turn you off the entire honorable profession because you will be praying for them to hurry up the next time your house gets broken in , or God forbid a loved one gets attacked.

Hope this answers your question.

hahaha why is it that most people who complain about the police are the same ones who are NEVER truly innocent? you don't want a ticket? DON'T SPEED! you don't want to be arrested? DON'T SMOKE WEED!!! you don't want to be pulled over? DON'T DRIVE THROUGH A BAD NEIGHBORHOOD IN YOUR LITTLE HOOPTIE PRETENDING YOU'RE SOME SORT OF GANGSTA!!!

yeah, there are bad apples in ever police department but please... don't be so hypocritical that you can sit there and tell me you did nothing wrong.... sheeeesh

Life is Precious
wow, you all have really bad attitudes towards law enforcement. My husband is a cop, and it really is sad that you lump all cops together. All the cops that I have ever known are really great people. It sounds like you have had a bad experience with the police. The police system isn't perfect, nothing is. Police are understaffed and overworked. No they can't just go into your house and take whatever, they have to have a warrant and can only act within the bounds of it. Police aren't here to control, they protect you. What do you think life would be like with out cops? I really think you need to put some real thought into the law enforcement system before you criticize it.

Not all of them. I am trying to become LAPD and I have never had a bad experience with an LAPD cop. I had one bad experience with a sheriff he said something pretty racist. He objected to my pronouncement of the word Los Angeles he told me this the US not Mexico. I am not even Mexican. Cops are good people but there are some bad ones out there though.

Sometimes I hear about corrupt cops and no doubt they exist, just like corrupt people of any other profession. In my personal experience though I have never had anything personally bad happen to me and have found cops to be pretty helpful where I am from. They don't harass, they don't entrap, and I have never once heard of planting evidence where I'm from.

When they are up against people who have an attitude like yours of course they are going to seem more arrogant they have to be a bit more forceful to remind you that THEY are enforcing laws, not you. You know they are people too right? They're just going to work and doing their job like anyone else, except they have a more noble job as far as I'm concerned. Just my opinion, I guess you're going to hate it though, anyone with conspiracy theories like yours would.

My 2 sons have been fairly critical of the law enforcement in the past and my reply has been, "Well if you want to change it, it'll have to be done from the inside".
I have encouraged my sons to join the police force and make a difference. I think that this is the only way to make the change.
Maybe you should have a think about it too...the other alternative would be getting involved in Politics but if you think the police are arrogant, smuggly superior and 'know it alls' then I suspect you don't watch enough yawn yawn party political broadcasts.yawn yawn..x

Heard it all before.

I hope you don't call the next time you need our help

?
No. I don't "know" this. It is people with mentality like yours that creates the need for law enforcement. You have your rights like everyone else. I have NEVER had a problem speaking up when I disagree with a cop but I do it in a way that everyone, even cops, deserve - with respect. I expect the same and have always gotten it. When you approach them with your attitude, you are inviting confrontation and I am sure you get it too.

Psycho Dave
do i agree well being a ex criminal have had many a run in been beat up chased singled out and do you want to know why i was a criminal being out of trouble for twenty years now and i never see or hear the police get no bother at all get my drift be law bidding and if you do get stopped by an officer a little courtesy goes a long way Dave

James M
I cannot agree with this. I work as a criminal defence lawyer and deal with the police all the time. A lot of them are very bright, and treat all people equally as that makes their job a lot easier. The vast majority of them would never break the law or do anything suspect to prove a case against someone, as there would be no point

Reading through the answers here, you're evidently a cop-bashing troll.

Be that as it may, you write extremely well and I'd bet you're of above-average intelligence.

Shame you don't use that for good instead of evil.

EDIT:

Too funny. I posted this and then read the next question down the list. Too funny.

The police have made life awkward for me a few times however, they do an excellent job under very strenuous situations and, under extreme pressure from so called do gooders like the p c brigade, and immigrants who think they can tell the police how they must act in their own country.

A barrier between us and the world we deserve???? You talk utter shite.

Cops do a difficult job and do their best despite all the red tape involved.

You also need to get your facts straight... we can't put you in a cell for 24 hours.. ON A WHIM!!!! or raid your house or take your property without a damn good reason!!!

Why don't you spend your time doing something more productive.

Police are useless at protecting the public, useless at finding the crinimals, great at getting good publicity, and robbing more money off the council tax payer.
They are not in it for the public, but for their own careers.

Many people join with the best of intentions, but the system they sign up to doesn't work.
