[I tried asking before but no cops replied. I need this replied to]
Is it good to volunteer with the police department as a good way of learning different jobs that I can get into? I signed up to volunteer in the fall and so far I know they are talking with the references I gave them.
I want to get into this as a career and thought that volunteering would be a good way to get involved right away, since the school thing is taking forever work out-I need 60 credits before I can go to the academy and I only have 5 or so credits. I have a long way to go, and I want to be surrounded by the PD as soon as I can-which is why I applied to volunteer.
So, my question is-did you cops ever volunteer first before going through the academy and all that? Is volunteering a good way to learn and get involved?
Also, how and where can I get sample tests that are needed to pass when entering the PD?

Volunteering is great. You get an idea of what is happening and they get an idea of what you are alike.
My city has a cadet program for any full time community college student. They work less than 20 hours a week, are paid fairly well and in all the years the system has been around not one cadet who wanted to be the police was turned down. Some of our former chiefs were cadets.
There are no longer any standardized tests.
All test are basically reading, comprehension, logic and a very small amount of math.
You may be given a part of the local police manual to read then asked questions on it or on who to interpret an action based on what you read.
What most people have problems with as far as the basic test goes is the physical agility portions. Even the the test criteria is usually easier for women in general they have more problems with the parts that need upper body strength and core strength.
All testing is differently mandated by the specific state you are a in and the department you are applying for. |

I don't know of any places to get a standardized sample test, not so sure they are standardized. It may vary from department to department. Maybe someone else could have a tip there. Or you can sift through some google links.
Just make sure you make schooling your priority. But volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door. I volunteered for 3 years and by the time I was old enough for the academy I had 36 written recommendations, all from Sergeants, Lieutenants, and Captains. I did a LOT of ride alongs back in the day, which was a blast, but really made me loose focus when it came to schooling. Just don't get into that habit. Schooling should be priority 1! |
