Was I really convicted of a crime?
Find answers to your legal question.

Was I really convicted of a crime?

back when i was 12 or 13 years old, i was arrested for stealing candy from a convenient store. i was placed on probation for one year and the charge was petty theft. i didn't go to court, and i don't remeber having to pay a fine. this happened 18 years ago. should i report this on my nursing school application? serious answers only. i am so confused.

Go back into your memory bank. I really can't see, nor have I ever arrested or had a store sign complaints on a 12 - 13 year old for stealing candy. It sounds like someone put a good fear into you. Your secret is safe. You don't have to tell anyone.

I doubt that you could be placed on probation for a year without going to court unless you pleaded guilty. They can't just assign you probation. I would talk to the clerk of the court to ask them to help you with the status of case and if needed get it expunged.

I found this on the web at "http://www.girlshealth.gov/future/juven...
I'm sure the advice is not specifically for girls, but also applies to males as well.
I think you should get your record expunged, so you won't have to worry about it in the future.

The truth about having a juvenile record
Perhaps you stole a car, wrote graffiti on your school walls, or shoplifted from a local store. It was stupid, and you have paid for it. You are labeled a juvenile delinquent (a child or teen under the age of 18 who commits an act which would be a crime if she or he were an adult).

Your bad choice happened some years ago, and now you are graduating from high school and wondering if this past will affect your entrance into college or the military. The short answer is "it could."

Having a juvenile record is serious. But, unlike an adult criminal record, it can be expunged—either destroyed or sealed—when you reach a certain age. Your juvenile record is not automatically expunged once you turn 18. You can take steps to have this done by contacting your probation office. You don’t need a lawyer to take care of this.

When you apply to colleges, college financial aid programs, professional licensing agencies, and employers, you might be asked if you have a criminal record. (A juvenile record IS a criminal record.) Only if your juvenile record is expunged can you say "no" on these applications.

If you are going into the military, federal law requires military applicants to tell ALL criminal history on recruiting applications, including expunged juvenile records. Also, in most states, such records are available to military investigators.

It is important to remember that you are not automatically barred from college or the military because you have a juvenile record. Depending on the offense, you can make a fresh start. We all make mistakes.

No one will find out about this, since juvie record ar sealed, and you begin anew at 18. No, I would not put this down or mention it.

.. .this can't be good

NO, I wouldn't mention it.

NSangel
don't think so. was probably wiped clean. if they do come up with something, then explain what it was. a stoopid childhood mistake. and since you kept your nose clean for 18 years, it should be fine.

no one is perfect. even yours truly spent a night in jail for saying the F word..ok, so it was in the presents of a cop, but it wasn't directed to the cop.

Most likely you do not have to report it. Typically juvenile records are sealed until your death. Also, most states don't adjudicate guilt in the same way as they do for an adult. It's basically a definition thing. In any case, unless they specify juvenile records, they won't find out about it and you shouldn't have to disclose it. Everyone does stupid stuff as kids; that's why it's kept confidential.

No i think if they want to find it out they can look up your history. I think your fine, dont worry about it.

no i wudnt do it petty crimes of this nature are wipped after three years so it shud be ok

If the crime was when you were a minor, you do not have to tell them. Most minor's records are expunged after they become adults (unless its a really violent crime).

Juvenile records are sealed. Only a judge can get to them and if you have not been in any trouble since may very well have been expunged. I wouldn't mention it.

no, all misdemeanors get erased when you turn 18, and you start over fresh

if you did get charged with the crime it will be on your juvenile criminal record. Most states don't allow juvenile records to be accessed but i would check because everyone is different.
