Was the police right?

i am a student staying in a shared house, i left my phone in a comunal area on the table at night when i came back in the morning i didnt find it, we asked the people in the house, an egyptian guy that we previously had problems with said that he found it nd he placed on the door step of my friend's room for a strange reason, so i called the police and they sent me an officer, the officer asked the guy if he had the phone he said that he took it and placed it on the doorstep but that he doesnt have it nd he also said that he had spent a year in jail. the police officer called for backup but then canceld it for no obvious reason, nd then she said that there is no evidence against the guy nd so she cant arrest him! wasnt him confecing moving the phone enough evedince ? the phone is valuable because it costs 400 pounds and it has all my contacts nd bank details on it, so if i think the desicion was unfair who should i contact?

:@ i didnt leave my phone on purpose i was pretty drunk that night nd i 4got it + i never expected anyone to steal it , and if that guy have'nt have moved it it would have probably stayed there all night!

Well, unfortunately for you, you really don't have any proof as to who took your phone. Call the cell phone company and let them know what happened. I'm assuming you checked with your friend to see if he found it on his doorstep. Also call your bank and let them know what has happened. Yes, the phone is very valuable, and cost you a bundle, and that's probably why it came up missing. Honestly hon, I don't think the police can help you out on this one. You'll either find your phone, or you will have to replace your phone. Sorry. :-(

dont leave your four hundred pound phone out in a student shared house. the police were wrong to even bother with it .

Yes the police were right. There is no evidence that he took the phone. I would hope you have contacted the cellphone company and reported the phone stolen. If someone else attempts to activate the phone they can notify the police.

the bank first to change all details before who ever has it finds it

The network to block your sim card to stop them from using the phone

Insurance company to make a claim (if you insured it)

and then the police again and say you want to another officer to look at the situation

u shud be done 4 wasting police time mate. he may have moved it but that doesnt mean he nicked it. and dont leave your phone lying about

There were no reasonable and probable grounds to believe that he committed a crime. You acknowledge leaving the phone, he acknowledges finding it and placing it somewhere else.
Anyone could have come and picked it up.

Had the police arrested this person like you wanted, they could have been sued for wrongful arrest etc, etc.

That's tough, I remember when my phone was stolen a few years back, I knew exactly who did it, but because there was no evidence, nothing could be done.

Don't give up though, keep trying, it is a Â£400 phone so do your best to get it back. Ask around to see if there's been any sight of it.

Unfortunately unless there's pretty much explicit evidence (i.e. video evidence) then the police are stuck.

What sort of an idiot keeps their bank details on a mobile phone....your a student, which means your an adult so it's about time you wised up to the world and took responsibility for your own daft actions.

Yes they were right, there is no usable evidence on what is a fact a petty crime if it is a crime. The only thing you have against this person that he admitted quite openly that he moved the phone. Silly question, have you phoned your number it may well be somewhere very silly and you wil owe an apology

contact your bank first. contact your mobile network and give them your mobile number they may be able to block it so the sim cant be used. dont leave anything around that could get pinched,
