In California a jail serves two purposes - detainment while after arrest, awaiting trial, etc. The second purpose is for incarceration up to one year (misdemeanors).
Prison is for incarceration for sentences longer than one year (felonies) |

Jail is when your in there for a certain amount of time, up to a couple of years.
Prison is when your there for a lifetime.
