What's realistically the best way to make a complaint about a policeman in the UK?

I have a problem with a county police force in the South-East.Where exactly should I do?Who is the best place to go for advice/help?

Ah!
I've made complaints to the the police before.

I wrote to the Inspector (sent to the police station via the 'Officer in Charge')
They treated the complaints seriously and me with respect. I think it was because I did it with a bit of tact. I mentioned all the things i thought they had done really well, but then mentioned the things I felt had let down the service.
I've not be victimised by them as a result, but who knows what they say about me behind my back!!!
It really depends on the complaint you have to make and why.

My advice would be go to CAB for advice. Write the police a nice letter, explaining good and bad points and ask how they expect to deal with the situation. Keep a copy of the letter.

The police provide a service and that service cant be improved unless they are told whats wrong.
Just dont go in there with all guns blazing!

Ignore incongru. She is a nasty racist. And northy is no better.

Write direct to the Chief Constable, sending a copy to the Police Complaints Authority.

I tried to make a complaint and thought it was going all well untill it was resolved and i was told i cannot appeal against it ( even though i had 2 statements from the officer which were completely different to each other) i then found out that most IPCC officers are ex-police officers!! then on top of that the investigating officer turned out to be a former member of the same force.!! basically, they hide behind the IPCC and it really is a case of one rule for them. i wonder what they would have said to me if i gave them 2 different stories about the same thing?.

the stats are there to make it look good. you may remember a recent incident in London when a guy was shot several times...did the police have any kind of warning or action against them? NO. just a few weeks of on full pay.

Report the officer to his/her seargant. That'll do the trick!

Ultimately, whoever you complain to, the police will just police themselves.

If you make any sort of serious complaint, expect lies, cover-ups and a swift brush under the carpet.

Good luck.

There is an official police complaints body. It's probably better to seek it out on the web than ring the local police. I can't help thinking though, that it is very difficult to successfully complain about thepolice. They are pretty tight and you would need a pretty substantial complaint to have it taken seriously. Good luck.

Is it a POLICEMAN or the whole of the Police Force in the County of Kent ?
If you have a genuine legitimate complaint and really believe you have a good case, then put it in writing to the Chief Constable and I am sure it will be investigated. The question as you put it is vague in so much we do not know the nature of your alleged complaint. Is it of a criminal nature, rudeness or something else.
As stated, if you are genuine, seek the assistance of the legal profession, either direct or through the Citizens Advice Bureau.

It really depends exactly what your complaint is.

You can contact your local police service and tell them you wish to make a complaint. In the first instance they will probably have an Inspector get in touch with you to speak about any issues you may have.

It maybe that the complaint can be resolved this way. If not, I am quite sure they will give you full details of who to contact and where in order to take your complaint further. If you do have a meeting with an Inspector, I would suggest that you make a list of the concerns you wish to bring up and note replies given. Make sure you keep a note of the Inspectors name and the date and time of any conversations.

If its about an individual officer go to the chief constable of the station where he works, they will ask if you are making an informal or formal complaint, one of which gets him severly reprimanded another means going to court.Ive had an informal complaint made against an office and had the chief come to my home and had a very nice appology letter and was told that the office had been warned and almost lost his job.

You have got them by the short and curlies mate. Just march up to the desk and say "I want to make a complaint"

ps go into Tesco and get yourself a tin of brown boot polish first. Cover your face with it and this will ensure they take your complaint even more seriously.
