Direct community restitution, just my opinion. Along with seeing the consequences of their actions. While it doesn't always work, it can help. Since many factors contribute to delinquency, there really isn't a one-fits all approach. |

Well I would say it depends on what kind of crime they committed. Some youth get labeled a criminal for silly things such as anti skateboarding laws. If a kid mows lawns and shovels sidewalks in the winter to save up and buy a skateboard. Then one day they are skating the police stop this youth and say "It's illegal to skateboard in city limits" even though the skater is in an alley that rarely sees any traffic. What do you expect the kid to do? I used to hop on my skateboard and skate to the edge of the woods and then run into the woods. Then that officer will always try and catch you to soothe his wounded ego.
If the kid is doing violent things or stealing things you need to approach that child with good positive leadership skills, and show him some compassion so that in the future when it is his turn to show some compassion perhaps he will. Yes there should be punishment, and consequences. Although the punishment and consequences should not be such that this youth feels he has no more options in life other than to become a criminal. |
