In the US we call it a baton. There is a straight baton, or a side-handled baton. The side handled baton is called a PR 24 made by the company called Monadnock The third type is an expandable baton. The more popular ones come from companies called Monadnock or ASP. They come in various lengths 6-8 inches for undercover work up to 26-32 inches for duty wear. The straight baton is available in longer lengths for use by horse mounted officers in a riot type situation. The side handle batons are primarily 24 inches and do come in a expandable variation. |

Here in the States it's properly called a baton.
"Truncheon" is primarily a UK term (also used in Australia and New Zealand).
A "nightstick" is what you use in bed.
And "billy club" is a gay bar. |

The actually term for that baton is a PR24. I don't recall the last time I saw a cop carrying one though.
We now carry expandable batons (asps). Much easier to haul around. |
