What's with this?

Ok, so something completely obvious that I just now felt like asking a question about...What's with everyone saying they "hate cops" all the time? Why did it become "cool" to hate the people that are out there putting themselves in danger to keep you safe? I just don't get how people can think this mentality of thinking cops are bad or whatever is right or cool or whatever else...

I don't think Yahoo! will give me enough space to cover this one.
Most of them have had some sort of run in with the police and feel like they were done wrong. So now they are on some sort of quest to prove to the world that the police are the real bad guys. They point out the few bad apples that are in all parts of society and try to say that all cops are dirty. Something like the way the Klan points at the bad people in the black community and claim all black people are welfare collecting thieves. In other words they stereotype. I suggested to one of these people a while back that they post something like I described above and see what kind of responses they get from the black community (I don't believe they ever tried that experiment).
There are others who have been told over and over again by others in their lives (i.e. their parents) that the police are corrupt and dirty and they have bought into it.
There are others that have watched to many movies and to much FOX news coverage of the murder of the woman in Ohio and assume that that is reality.
Others could never be us. They could never pass the psych test, the background check, etc.
The sad thing is that we don't want dirty cops in our ranks anymore then the normal citizens do. I have been in Law Enforcement for over sixteen years and I believe that over 99% of us are great people doing a thankless job that many people couldn't do if they wanted to. Imagine the country going a week without its police force and what would happen....... |

Probably the ones saying they hate cops are the ones getting busted everyday for doing things they shouldn't be doing? |

Its the result, of the Media, constantly bashing Law enforcement people. They deserve our respect, unless they abuse our trust. |

Thank you for your concern, ma'am.
They hate the police and this is their place to get it off their chest. Don't let it bother you.
It is nice to hear from someone supportive, though. You are very much appreciated. |

As much as they have a thankless job, there are some cops, a minority to be sure, but enough that are out for a power trip. They like to provoke and get a violent reaction, especially with minorities. |

Free speech. Let them say what they want. We, as police officers, know we're serving a good cause (the good ones, anyway). It really doesn't bother anyone that's doing the right thing. |

Like in any profession there's a few bad apples, its just that the liberal dominated media only play up the bad incidents and ignore the good work the Police do. |

I don't hate cops, generally speaking. I do, however, harbor disgust for anyone who thinks they are "above the law" including, but not limited to, the President, illegal aliens, and police who abuse their power and our trust.
I have a good friend who is a cop in my town, and most of the cops here seem to be pretty okay people. But we had one cop who decided to steal a few grand from the evidence room ... which he admitted to in a lie detector test when applying for a job as a FL cop.

As always there are exceptions to every rule, it just seems that the bad cops are coming a bit more often than many people are comfortable with. |

I think many of the attitude problems started changing during the Viet Nam War when the hippies and flower children rebelled and turned against their parents and the police. Unfortunately they also taught their children, who taught their children, and the vicious cycle continues.
Most kids are allowed to rule the home today so they don't learn to respect their parents who let them run wild so when they get older, they get in trouble all the time and have alot of negative contact with the police through "their own" actions.
But when you've never been taught to take responsibility for your actions like a "man" (or woman), it's easier to blame the officers ~ after all, that's what the parents do when Johnny or Julie get in trouble over and over and over again even when they are caught in the act all the time.
When I was growing up, if you got in trouble at school, you got in trouble at home, too, and look out if you got in trouble with the law. And there wasn't anything wrong with that because most kids thought twice before getting in trouble and the kids learned respect for any authority figure.
Attitude is taught at home ~ it can either be good or it can be bad. Unfortunately, bad seems to be winning alot more today. |

Anyone but me ever notice that you hardly EVER hear of things that the police do that are good? Why is that? Oh, maybe because it is expected of us or it isn't newsworthy. I work for the sheriffs office in my state and I see myself as not only a respresentative of the Sheriff where my actions reflect directly upon him, but also as someone that helps citizens in my community.
Now Brown'n said "What should we think when cops get away with corruption and murder. Or when they use extreme force in a situation that dosen't require it. Where are you living? Do you only see one side?" It sounds to me like she wants the police reined in. Do me a favor Brown'n. Ask yourself what we should do when citizens commit murder, break into houses, steal your car, etc because the police reins were pulled in. Also, bare in mind that, just like any occupation, bad people do occupy the ranks of ALL professions. And what exactly is your term for excessive force?
The police, from my experience, are only liked when we are needed, not when we are doing our jobs. Try filling in my shoes, pull over a speeding motorist that was talking on their cellphone doing about 90 mph on the innerstate. Then, approach the vehicle, ask for their license and registration, and get cursed out because you had the nerve to pull them over, hear every excuse in the book, and then, once you have completed the traffic summons, they curse you out again and take off. Police underappreciated? I think so. |

Not everyone hates cops. It is only the people with something to hide that hates them. Cops are people too and should be respected as a person. How would you like it if someone referred to you as the (whatever it is you do) all the time. |

Personally cops in Australia have just become a waste of time. They concentrate on revenue raising. Such as handing out tickets for going a few k's over the speed limit, not wearing a seat belt, littering etc.
Police are never there when you need them. Average of 5 hours for police to turn up after a burglary. 2 hours for a domestic distpute.
They basically enforce unpopular ideas of politicians.
And are getting to powerful. If they do something currupt to someone they get kicked off the force with a pension. They have lost the appeal of the the BIg 3. Police, ambulance, Firefighters. If a ambulance officer asks me to do something i will do with out hesitation. And i know it is to save lives. But if a cop tells me to do something, he can get stuffed. People don't llike to be forced to do something. We are not in primary school anymore. If i thought the police had people best interest at heart like the ambo's and fire fighters i would be right behind them. |
