What Are All The Duties A "Park Ranger" Can Legally Preform?

Lately where I live there have been several instances w/a new Park Ranger that have raised some eye-brows & confused a large number of people on what a Ranger can legally do. The new Park Ranger has been pulling people over, frisking/searching them at times, & even arresting them. Some was said to have even happened off of Park Land. Recently, I myself had pulled over in a wide-spot to talk to a friend when the ranger pulled in behind, approached my car, ask me to "please step out of the vehicle" (Which I did of course) then she proceeded to tell me she was only checking to make certain I was ok because she saw my head leaning over my steering wheel. She was implying that I was being beat, BUT she then ask "Is he a friend, you boyfriend, or what"? I found it all VERY odd. I went ahead & thanked her... By the way this all happened off of any park premises. Please tell me ALL you know.

There are 7 different kinds of Park Rangers.
Law enforcement rangers have police powers and enforce national laws as well as park regulations. public. In units of the U.S. National Park System, law enforcement Rangers are the primary police agency; their services may be augmented by the US Park Police, particularly in the Washington, DC and San Francisco metropolitan areas. The U.S. National Park Service also has a section of "Special Agents" who conduct more complex criminal investigations. According to U.S. Department of Justice statistics, National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers suffer the most number of felonious assaults, and the highest number of homicides of all federal law enforcement officers. |

Well, you don't tell us whether you are talking about federal (NPS,) state, county, or other park rangers. You don't tell us what state you're in.
And are you sure about the "off park land" business? Many highways cross park land, even miles from park facilities. Also, park rangers may patrol off-park areas under mutual aid agreements just as sheriff's deputies, state police, and others often may patrol within park boundaries. |
