Living in Cali. I can tell you. It's the dumb drivers. Slowing down for stupid reasons. Driving so slow I could get out of my car and walk passed them. Slowing down to be a damned lookie-loo, rubbernecking incidents that don't concern them. I could go on and on. |

everytime a car touches their brakes (usually for no discernible reason) in moderate to heavy traffic, the people behind that car see the brakelights, and 7 out of 10 cars that see those lights will in turn touch their brakes. If you have 20 cars within visibility of the 1st person that touched their brakes, then 14 will more than likely now hit the brakes, if 40 cars see that, then you have 28 hitting their brakes, it works like a wave, only the traffic is moving forward and you now have 70-75% of the cars in one short span touching their brakes and it creates a considerable slow down. Add into that people who aren't in the lane they need to be in and are now crossing traffic to either take their exit or move into what they assume is a faster lane only to discover that 1/2 a mile up the lane is closed due to an accident, and you have now got major conjestion.
Avoid the tendancy to tap the brakes automatically when you see a car 200 feet ahead of you tap their brakes. Wait until you see a reason to slow down other than a brakelight ahead of you.
figure out which lane you need to be in and go ahead and get in it and stay there, everytime a person changes lanes in heavy traffic it gums things up. Plus what happens when you are to the far left and need to be exiting 4 lanes over in 1/4 mile and have 300 cars between you and your exit.
Keep your eyes on the road instead of accidents. The stop & gawk really slows everything down. |

Too many cars, not enough road, not enough drivers driving exactly the same speed, lane changing, entrance and exit ramps. |

either congestion due to closed lanes or something as simple as one car going slower than the speed limit or waiting to long after the light changes green it causes a chain reaction. All the rules of the road like speed right of way lights they are all set up to avoid traffic, but not to many people follow the rules.Something you wouldn't even think of like being nice and letting someone into traffic actually causes more since the right of way chain was broken.Sorry to rant but I'm from Boston and get very tense just thinking about it LOL. |

What Causes traffic?
Two things in combination
Cars and Drivers !! (you can throw in trucks, motorcycles and other assorted vehicles at will --- but the first two listed will get you the aforementioned item quite nicely without any additions at all ) |
