Education is your high school diploma and college is not necessary but some police forces require it so a associates degree in Criminal Justice should be enough unless other wise posted in the job description. You also need to be at least 21-25 year of age, again depending on the police departments requirements.

Then after applying for a department, they will then contact you and provide you with a testing date and time. You need at least a 75% to pass. Some test dates can be up to 3 months after receiving your letter.

You will then be interviewed and screened by the police force. Upon hiring you will have to attend the police academy. Screening includes psychiatric evolution, drug testing, and background check.

Once you are hired on by a police department you will then attend a police academy which will take approximately 25 weeks.

Then you are official a rookie for the police department.

Not all states have the same procedures but this is the process I went through.

To add to Capture's comments, most processes these days also include a physical fitness test, a doctor's physical, written tests, interviews (yes, more than one...I had one with the background investigator, 1 with the chief and majors and 1 street officer, and a video interview talking to fake people in fake situations). You will also have a written and oral psychological exam and a polygraph test. Some depts. require a full bachelor's degree for employment. Academy training is rigorous, with defensive tactics, firearms, physical training, and many classes like domestic violence, traffic, law, taser, pepper spray, etc. When you get out on the street, you will have about 12 weeks training with a field training instructor, who will teach you how to use your academy training on the street.

You must be the type of person that is a leader; confident, but not overly so; quick thinking; able to separate your job from home life (an absolute must).
