What alternatives are used to reduce overcrowding in large prisons?

We have some ridiculous answers here and some thoughtful ones as well. I will add another thought for you to consider.
This is a progressive problem that has taken the last 30 plus years to generate to the level it is at today.
In the past, the USA operated what was called Civil Death. This meant when a person was convicted of a felony, he was kicked off the face of the planet. He had NO rights while in prison and did his time. Life was HARSH inside the wire. The convict was forced to work 8 hours a day in a prison factory making products that were sold on the public market to help reduce the public burden of his incarceration.. This also taught him the values of getting up every morning and reporting to work, so when he was released, he was prepared to actually work a respectable job. There was little to no rehabilitative therapy in this time period. The convict was forced to consider his actions and what would happen if he continued on his present path and was sentenced to prison again. This was usually enough to force the person to rehabilitate themselves. The recidivism rate of this time period was 15%.
Somewhere in the mid 1970's, liberals started taking over in top management. We now have college graduates coming into the prison system in management positions who have NO clue as to how the criminal mind works or thinks. They have college modules showing how THEY would respond to given stimulus and they incorrectly assume that all persons think and respond like they would. The prison factories are long gone. Inmates ( not allowed to call them convicts today,,,,it might offend someone) sit around all day watching tax payer supplied 60 inch color tvs and working out in tax payer supplied gyms. No values are taught and no work ethics are even tried to be instilled. Instead, they have mandated attendance in drug rehabilatation. Because they are forced to, they will sit and listen (sometimes) and not care in the slightest. Our recidivism rate today is an astounding 84% and is showing NO signs of reducing itself, depite new programs being devised by the liberal brain trusts every single month. Our justice and penal system is now a giant turnstile and the inmates don't mind returning since there is NO deterrence built into it.
If you truly want to see the recidivism rate reduce itself, it is going to take another 15 to 20 years. We need to bring back the prison workshops. Bring back mandatory work. Teach work ethics. Take away the giant color tvs and use them as a perk when work quotas are met satisfactorily. Stop the frivolous lawsuits that the jailhouse lawyers file every single day, tying up the legal system at a cost of millions of dollars a year because each and every motion must be evaluated to see it is has merit ( which 99% of them do not.....they are simply hoping that something will stick and they can win a lawsuit for a couple of thousand dollars with no cost to them to try).
When our penal system goes back to a Civil Death approach, the inmate will again be forced to consider whether he wants to risk violating the law and returning to a "Hell on Earth" in prison or staying legal and remaining free. If you look at the recidivism rates of the two different systems, you will see that the old ways truly worked the best.
I hope this helps and you can find it useful

I would think that one of the best ways to prevent crime is through education. |

I think that the only solution to over crowding in prisons is a time consuming solution.
We need to start with the generation of children now, and show them unconditional love. Then society needs to become more equalized....making sure that there is enough for everyone and that there are not people sitting in mansions, wasting and throwing away things that ppl who are in the ghettos could use. Poverty is a main cause in crime.
If ppl feel like they have enough to make it through their daily lives without being hungry, cold, or sick....they will not be so desperate to commit crimes.
If all ppl are given support, unconditional love, and education from an early age, they will be more productive, self assured ppl.
When these things happen, there will be less crime and less overcrowding |

Here in Broward County, Florida they do a little thing called county sentencing. If the State system is crowded, then judges start giving 364 days (a county jail sentence) instead of a year and a day. (two days different there, but one is prison and one is not.) But we have a huge I mean Huge county system here. We have THEE largest sheriff's department in the entire USA. we DO NOT have the largest County in the USA. I'm not sure if we are even in the top ten, close though, I am sure.
The Private Prison system is also growing leaps and bounds. Private companies like Wackenhut, or other security firms, can supervise inmates much cheaper than the State can (anyone surprised at that one?) And do a better, usually more humane job of it too! So your state does not have to expand the prison system, just the budget! |
