What am I required to provide to cops?
Find answers to your legal question.

What am I required to provide to cops?

My friend and I was at a park one night in Gilbert AZ and the police showed up because some kids were lighting fireworks. They demanded IDs from us but I argued that I don't have to provide any ID since I'm not required to carry any around with me. He told me that I was being detained and that I had to show it. What info I'm I required to tell the police in this situation? Did I even have to tell them what my name was?
Additional Details
I look up and found ARS 13-2412A Refusing to provide truthful name when lawfully detained; classification. And according to this I only had to give my name if the officer suspected I was involved in a criminal offense, not a civil offense.

But I don't think being on the complete other side of the park were kids were lighting fireworks constitutes reasonable suspicion.

You don't have to show your ID to police. You are protected by the 4th Amendment. You can just keep silent the whole time. You do not have to answer any questions or give your name.

In that situation, they couldn't detain you. You were doing nothing wrong. Cops cannot simply make people stay for questioning, unless they are pulled over or have done something wrong. You could have left whenever you wanted.

who is #1?
You are required to identify yourself, name and address. Most people are not required to obtain or carry or produce papers while on foot. Edgar Lawson in the 70s had the problem of cops demanding ID and he managed to get convicted of violating some statute and take his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Where he won.

The argument is that since one is not required to obtain ID one can not be forced to produce it on demand.

For some reason Lawson doesn't come up on searches. That's odd.

Here's an Airport case:

well they have all the power. I have been arrested for resisting arrest, and nothing else. I do think they have the right to detain you if they ask for ID, and you don't have one.

Failure to identify will put you in jail until they find out who you are.

My brother was cited for "vagrancy" for not being able to furnish his identity to a law enforcement officer upon request. CA but in Oregon you don't have to. It varies by state.

You are correct that you do not have to carry I.D. in this country with some exceptions. If you are being detained under suspicion or with probable cause for a suspected criminal act, an officer has the right to positively identify you prior to releasing you. Your right to remain silent is only applicable if custody and interrogation about criminal actions are present. Your name and where you live do not fall under this right.

Your rights were violated man. If any police officer walks up to you on the street and asks you questions you don't have to say a word. You can even walk away and they cant do anything about it. If you are not free to leave and you are being interrogated you are considered in custody, which means they must read you your rights.

This may be a "free" country, but you Are required to carry ID & furnish it upon request of Police. I foret what you can be charged with, but I know you can get a ticket for that.

Could they LEGALLY detain you? Certainly! Is in unconstitutional? Certainly- but isn't that just a silly detail these days?
