What are different variations of a controlled buy? Do you always have to use marked bills?

One of my buddies got nailed for selling weed and the police report mentions they did a controlled buy.

The articulation mentions how they had an informant go inside and bring the weed back out to them. For this to be a controlled buy wouldn't there need to be some kind of marked bills or else wheres the control?

Also he lives in a really bad neighborhood, I know any informant helping the police must have been a crackhead and his reliability can not be good. The problem with informants is usually their trying to get out of a crime by snitching on someone else... this motivation as well as a extensive criminal background in my opinion would void the informants credibility... but very seldom will the informants credibility get challenged. I don't understand why police can get a search warrant based on prior criminals word trying to get out of a crime. I know no informant in his area could be deemed credible hence the search warrant was illegally approved.

My main question is are there different type of controlled buys with regards to drugs.

Oh now I understand, they never had a search warrant... they used the informant to buy drugs which gave the probable cause.

That's a great way to avoid having to get a search warrant... but it seems like entrapment in a sense.

No. A controlled buy is just that, a buy that was controlled by the officers.

The informant is searched before he/she enters the house to buy from. This ensures he/she has no dope before he/she goes in. The cops watch the informant go in and come out and then search him/her again and take the dope they bought. This ensures the informant didn't "pinch" the dope or keep any money.

Therefore, there is PC to believe the dope came from that house.

No need to mark money. That's TV crap. Most times the cops will write down the serial numbers from the bills they use for later comparison to money they seize during the search warrant, just to beef up the case.

This form of obtaining a warrant leaves little room for questioning the informant's reliability because the cops watched him/her and knew they got the dope from that house. What's to question?
