Tracking suspects or lost people, apprehensions, article searches (if an article is lost in a field, such a wearpon that was thrown), open searches (looking for people out in the open), building searches( people and drugs), detection work (drugs, bombs, or in airports they are used for bombs, weapons, drugs or food), handler protection.
Not all dogs are trained for all of the above. It depends on what the department requirements are.
ETA- almost forgot, here our dogs are used for community Policing as well. They attend schools and do demonstrations,. They are very approachable. |

This answer to this question will vary depending on each departments needs and requirements. In my unit, all of our dogs are patrol dogs meaning they search for and locate 'bad guys' in buildings and open areas. We do not do 'locate only' searches for lost children or Alzheimer's patients because we have 'find and bite' dogs. We can't risk biting anyone like that, bad PR. We have a few 'dual purpose' dogs that also search for narcotics in addition to the 'bad guys'. Our dogs don't do evidence searches or tracking, but do participate in public demonstrations which are a huge hit. We have bomb dogs that are stationed at the airport.
We also enter our dogs in competitions against other police dog/ handler teams across the state. We compete for titles in several categories (building search, area search, apprehension, agility, and narcotics). The fastest times don't always win, we are scored on our tactics as well. There are individual awards as well as team titles. Lots of fun.........bragging rights also. |
