Follow the money. Supply and demand always fall into balance, the only thing that changes is the price. Inhibit supply in the face of continued demand and the price goes up.

Our problem is that organized crime has better economists that the government.

Drug use is the cause. If no one wanted to use drugs then no one would want to traffic in them a simple matter of supply and demand. Unfortunately the traffickers also deal in murder and mayhem but we all know that drugs do have side effects.

I am just reading a little book called the Politics of Heroin by Alfred W McCoy. Back in the 50s the French started financing their cash strapped war in Vietnam by smuggling Heroin.

Well the French had to leave to go fight their dirty wars elsewhere and the CIA stepped in and took over the Heroin. Smuggling it back to the USA in the bodies of dead soldiers on Air America.

The profits were used to buy loyalty of locals and provide them with guns to kill opponents.

During the late 70s and 80s Nicaragua became a problem by electing a socialist, or in the eyes of Nixon a revolutionary left wing communist sympathizer!

Never mind that Nicaragua was a tiny country with no possible way of threatening the United States, it had to be invaded.

Unfortunately Congress didn't want to use your hard earned tax dollars to go to war and instead the CIA had to build a rebel army out of locals by helping them to smuggle cocaine into the USA.

Now you have Colombia, officially the biggest ally of the USA in its region (Hugo Chavez experienced a coup financed by the USA so he doesn't like you).

And what does Colombia do? They make the most Cocaine in the world! Now the USA gives their army training and guns and helicopters and big bombs that go BOOM!

What do you get in return guys? A 50% cut on a trillion dollar industry that helps finance your factories that make guns and bullets and bombs.

Mexico is falling apart right now and people are dying, they tried to bring in gun control. But it won't work when the USA is selling guns to gangs and letting them export them to Mexico.

Illegal immigrants go one one way and you hate it maybe, but you send death, drug money and misunderstanding the other.

Criminals who are seeking to make money are not that much different then business people, except the whole rule of law thing. That is why a majority of Organized crime syndicates will seek to expliot corruption in government, Political Action Committees seeking to legalize the substance and unemployed/uneducated people to establish there operations

Drugs are illegal. People want drugs. If you sell drugs - you make money. If pot were legal and treated like alcohol - and taxed - the traffickers wouldn't have a client base for pot anymore.
