I notice in a lot of police shows/movies, they always say something like "Police, come out with your hands up." Are they required to say this because I think it just gives the criminal a chance to escape.

Some states allow no knock warrants but most require u to say something like police search warrant and then they bust down ur front door, this is also for officer safety because the possibly armed drug dealers or whatever they are, may be more inclined to shoot someone if they thinks its a rival gang or someone besides armed cops busting into their house |

Police are required to "Knock and announce" then wait a reasonable amount of time. Reasonable is interpreted by the situation - size of the residence, type of crime the suspect is wanted for, the type of search warrant.
Courts used to suppress evidence if police violated the "knock and announce" requirement, however about two years ago the supreme court ruled that you should not suppress evidence. They really didn't say what happens if they violate it though, so its somewhat undecided. |

There are 2 types:
Search Warrents: These you have to "knock and annouce" before you can enter the building. I was trained to do: "Police, we have a Search Warrant!" Knock Knock Knock "Police, Search Warrant!" Knock Knock, Kick the door in.
No Knock Warrants: Basically you scream "Police Search Warrant!" while your'e going threw the door. |
