Today I was caught shoplifting and the police came and my dad came. First they asked me questions like my name, birthday, address, etc. Then they said I would have to be prosecuted and go to court. But I don't know when. So what are the possible consequences and when will I go to court? I know what I did was wrong and I am stupid for doing it and I regret I ever did it.

I am 12 years old, this is my first time being in trouble with the police, the item was under $40.
I wish I could take it back so much and I swear on my life I will never do this kind of thing again.

You will get a slap on the wrist at most. A fine that your parents will pay for you and maybe community service. If you do any sports at school they may tell your school and if so you will be kicked off the team.
Seems pretty weak doesn't it? Huge weight off your shoulders? That's whats wrong with our system. You are freaked out now but when you go to court you will be given such a light sentence that you won't learn your lesson. One can only hope your parents enact some form of punishment themselves that will teach you a lesson. Otherwise you may do it again, and at the very least you will grow up thinking you can get away with doing what you want because the consequences of getting caught are not enough to make you not do it. |

A fine, community service at the very worst probation. It has to be over a certain amount for jail time so you should be ok as long as you don't do it again. |
