I agree, I also wonder what is the point of having handicapped parking at the mall? If you can walk through the mall why can't you walk through the parking lot???????? |

To be qualified for a handicap parking permit you must have a completed form on file with the state, from your doctor that states you have one of the following conditions:
Orthopedic or Neurologic-can't walk without stopping or without the assistance of a device such as a walker or w/c or another person assisting you
Cardiac-a heart condition that prevents extensive walking
Respiratory-You have problems breathing due to ashtma or other respiratory condition or you need oxygen to breath or your FEV(forced expiratory volume) is less than a certain percentage as measured by a pulmonary function test.
Not all people who have Handicap Parking Placards have obvious problems. Some are heart or breathing related, which may not be evident to the rest of us. |

There are two types, permanent and temporary. My husband got a temporary one due to a surgery he had. It was for 6 months but he was not disabled that long. You have to remember that if you borrow someone's car and they have the handicap placqard, then you too can park in the handicap space. Ever go to Walmart and see how they have these parking spaces? Yes it's a joke! |

I thought your question was serious at first, but you're dumber than I expected.
(1) EVERYBODY doesn't use one, (2) Some handicaps aren't easily noticed and EVERYONE doesn't walk fine, (3) If you had my physical condition, I doubt you would want the spots far away (4) I hope you do use a handicap space some day AND get caught [ NO JOKE ]- there is a hefty fine in most states and just having a "permit" doesn't qualify you...you also have o have the registration (which doesn't come in Cracker-Jacks). (5) Some lazy a_ _ do abuse those spots and I love reporting them and seeing them get a ticket and/or watching their cars towed. |

There is a reason that handicap parking spaces are closer to the door. Mostly because handicapped people can't walk that much. Its not a question of exercise. Now, I agree that there are people who will park in a handicapped space and hand that little placard just so they can park close.
One day I saw someone pull into one of those spaces and drop someone off and stayed in the car. If they were going to stay in the car, they could have parked farther away.
I am a little skeptical when I see them, but in Ohio, you can only get one if you have a form signed by your doctor.
And just because is overweight, there could also be other health issues. |

Yes, handicap parking is really misused. I'm older and pretty screwed up and could get one but I just don't feel right since I can still walk pretty good.
The doctors will issue a form that the person takes to the DMV to get the permit issued. I really hate it, sorry young fellers, when you see a couple of young people jump out of one with the tag in the window. They are probably living with grandma and just to rube in how useless they are they use the permit.
What really suc*s is that I've seen cops park in they under the guise of going into the store on police business. I've watched them come out with a bag of cra* they just bought. It's hard to instill respect into our younger people when the pigs act like that. |

Each state has their own set of qualifications to determine eligibility for a handicap permit. For example, here are those for the state of Texas:

People with heart conditions, lung disease, severe arthritis, etc may not appear to be handicapped, but definitely benefit from closer parking. My cousin has had permits because she has severe asthma and if she's out in the cold weather for more than a few minutes it triggers attacks that require hospitalization. |

Well in order to get a handicap parking permit you need to be legally handicap. Legally handicap requirements vary by state. You could say the person just can not walk large distances without tremendous amount of energy and amplitudes of pain. |

I have a handicap parking permit and got it as a result of my doctor filling out paperwork that is required by MRV in my state.
I don't need to walk to get exercise because I use a cane as a result of a permanent injury. Some people have conditions that can't be seen like breathing or a heart condition. |

It is very difficult to get a permit for handicapped parking, and not everyone with one is noticably handicapped. Many people have had heart attacks or have been diagnosed by a doctor with heart problems and are at danger of having one. Some may have cancer. Others have injuries that don't show in a 'limp'. Many are at risk for stroke, spinal problems, etc. or have respiratory problems. If there is anyone who doesn't have it for a reason, it is either stolen, fake, or given by a very uninformed patient. In the case of the latter, the individual who is issued the permit will most often lose it and have to reapply with a huge strike against him or her. Not easy.
Please understand that in order to get a handicapped parking permit you must have certain medial criteria. Handicaps are not always visible, so don't judge automatically. There is often a lot of red tape to go through to obtain this permit. Some of those with permits are accused by others of not having disabilities because their problems aren't apparent. This is awfully unfair. Most permits are given to those with permanent disabilities, but there are temporary ones as well for those whose disability is temporary. It is ILLEGAL to use someone else's unless they are in the car with you. This includes husbands & wives. Noone can display a permit without having the person who it was issued to in the car. If you suspect this, call the police, but understand that it is pretty rare. Most states carry a very hefty fine for utilizing an unregistered permit. And please trust me, if doctors thought exercise was a treatment for a disability, they wouldn't sign a form for a parking permit. A person with a handicapped permit is endangered by too much exertion. Before you judge, try to understand this more. Thanks. |

My wife gets looks all the time when she parks the car after dropping her mother (double amputee) off at the store with her wheelchair (or vice versa when they are leaving).
Most are quick to shut their trap (and feel ashamed) when they see my wife helping her mother transfer between her wheelchair and the car's passenger seat.
Unfortunately, handicap stickers have been abused and people need to speak up when they see such abuse. The law needs to be enforced because too many use these stickers for their own convenience, and not when they are in the company of a handicapped person (or are one themself). It is a sad testimony about the direction that much of society has taken. |

I have one because I have a breathing problem-sometimes I can walk a mile w/o any problems then again I have my days where 50 feet is a struggle. There are all kinds of health problems out there and just because you dont see anyone limping etc does nto give you and many others to feel it is not a "deserved privialge". So because you dont see someone walk funny this qualifies to be the judge as to whom is or is not handicapped. |

You can draw a check for any reason and as long as you draw a check, you can get one. It makes no sense at all. You have to park real close to the store so you don't have to walk that far but you can walk around the store for 3 hours.Come on!!! |
