What can an off duty cop do?

Ok, so i have a 350z and i was going about 100 on the highway, then when i pulled off my exit ramp, a car was riding my ***, then pulled up to the side of me and showed me his badge, then he rolled down his window and said something along the wlines of "You should not be driving that car, im gunna make sure you never drive it again" sort of thing. He also said that he got my license plate... So i went home, because i figured that he would report it or something. It happenedd about an hour ago and nothing yet... the thing is is that my dad bought the Z used about 2 weeks ago, and it hasnt had any plate changes or anything... So my uestion is, am i screwed? was the cop just trying to scare me? Do the plates even link to my name or what? Thanks

The police are never off duty. He probably won't do anything else. He would have radioed for a marked on duty police officer to pull you over and give you a ticket if he intended on doing something about it. I would take his advice though and quit breaking the speed laws or you will lose your license for reckless driving at that speed and your insurance will go to about $2,000 per year.

Cops are never 'off duty" they can and will enforce the law at all times.

ummm cops are never "officially" off duty..... if someone is breaking the law (which you were) then they have the right to do something about it. you probably will get in some sort of trouble later but just see what happens...if its YOUR car and your name is on the title of the car then your plates WILL point to you....

We have the right and the obligation to uphold the law on and off duty. The only difference in us being on duty and off duty is that one we are being paid for and the other we are not. And yes we can find out everything about who you are and how to find you just by the plate

If you had the balls to go 100 on the highway, you should have the balls to wait and sweat this out or come clean and tell your old man what you did. Good Luck! (You may need it)

He can write a report and forward it to the County District Attorney's Office. They will review it and if it holds any water, they may send you a letter to get pre-booked at the local County Jail and issue you a court date, or they may request a Warrant for your arrest from the local Magistrate.

I think that technically he can't do anything to you since he was off duty, but if he wants to call a cop that is on duty I'm sure they would check on it. More than likely he just wanted to scare you. If the plates aren't in your name it may or may not link to you...it depends if they are linked with the title yet. If he did call someone...who do you think they would believe...a cop or younger adult/teenager? Whether you get in trouble or not you better take this as a lesson learned because it's dangerous to drive that fast and next time it may be a cop on duty.
