nothing can be done ,sorry to say. we are just going to end up just like the states. the police here will be just like u.s.a police eventually. carrying guns. what a sad and sorry world we now live in. i have three kids 2,4 and 9, heaven knows what it is going to be like when they are adults

Banning handguns only destroyed a sport, as the scum still have them. You must instead deport all gang members to the colonies. How else will we be rid of them, seriously?

Well, you could let people defend themselves. I read in one of your British newspapers about a man who saved his friend from a crazed druggie by stabbing said attacker, and got stuck in jail. If you make guns illegal only criminals will have them, recently most criminals in British jails in a survey said they could get guns if they wanted.

Not much now..its too late... when Michel Ryen killed all those people in Hugerford ,the Government made had gun ownership illegal....THAT one single ruling drove Guns "Underground"....Now there even easier to get....
Drive to France , with a British passport you don't even get stopped at Dover ....you just wave it out the window..!! , My lorry driver mate has been over 200 times and has NEVER be checked ... and he drives all over Europe !! so just how many guns could he have brought back ( enough to make a small army ..? ) .... So like i said ,,,its too late ,,,,,,the damage is done ......Nuff said.

There's not much can be done, apart from adopting Ray Mallon's old zero tolerance policing policy in the worst hit spots, with armed Police patrols + "stop & searches" + confiscations of unlicensed weapons.

Then maybe the little sh*ts responsible for this sort of stuff will start thinking twice about doing it again after having a Police Armed Response Team pointing some Heckler & Koch MP-5 Assault rifles at 'em.

Strengthening the law
We have:

introduced a minimum five-year sentence for people convicted of possessing an illegal firearm
made it an offence to possess an air weapon or imitation firearm in public without legal authority or reasonable excuse
increased the age limit for possession of air rifles to 17
prohibited certain air weapons that are easily converted to fire live ammunition
The Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 includes provisions to:

target imitation firearms â€“ by making it illegal to manufacture or sell imitation firearms that could be mistaken for real firearms, strengthening sentences for carrying imitation firearms, and creating tougher manufacturing standards so imitations canâ€™t be converted to fire real ammunition
reduce illegal use of air weapons â€“ by increasing the age limit for buying or firing air weapons without supervision
Targeting illegal firearm supplies
Weâ€™re cutting off the supply of firearms into the country by tightening security on import routes and international mail, and monitoring online firearm suppliers.

Tackling the rise in gun culture
We established the Connected (new window) programme to support local community groups in their fight against gun crime.

We also held a highly successful gun amnesty in 2003 which resulted in the handing in of 43,908 guns and 1,039,358 rounds of ammunition.

I think that the government in some ways are going in the right direction, however I would up the minimum sentence for possession of firearms. A 5 year sentence generally means 2.5 - 3 years, which is not enough.

In my job I have many dealings with the effects of gun crime and see little deterrant for those that carry them.

We deal and target many drug gangs whose members are suspected of having access to firearms (mostly pistols because they can be discreetly hidden). Most of the gangs and members in my area are black (I'm not being racist and I say this from my knowledge of them) and think nothing of shooting at other gang members.

Despite the heavy presence and targetting of these individuals, for them it is business as usual. They are fully aware of us but are happy to take the risk. We chip away at them but invariably as one is sent down another is released.

Educating people first of all and long sentences for people who carry or sell guns illegally. Also if you murder someone intentionally, be it with a gun or not, you should expect a very harsh sentence because thats someones life you have taken away.
