1)some seven year old dails 911 then hangs up after the dispatcher answers.
2) a house alarm which is false goes off. police either call the house or come to the house.
3) a store alarm goes off like at midnight

Well, like someone else said, cops shouldn't make assumptions. However, these are a few of the things that might be going through their heads when they respond.
1) They don't know it was a 7 year old. It could have been someone who was being held hostage after their home was invaded. The victim could have just dialed the phone, before the invaded grabbed them. The dispatcher would call back, and if there was no answer, officers would be dispatched to check the location.
2) They don't know it's false. For all the police know, a group of armed men could have broken into the house with the intention to rob, rape and murder the people inside. Like #1, they will call the house, and if there is no answer, officers will check the house to make sure everything is ok.
3) If an alarm goes off at any time, a crime is probably being comitted. If it's during the day, it's probably an armed robbery of the cashier. If it's at night, after closing, a burglar probably broke in to steal things. The police response would be the same as #1 and #2. |

Good police officers don't make assumptions. They don't assume that it's a false alarm, they don't assume it's a fire, they don't assume it's a medical emergency, and they don't assume it's a crime. They go and investigate, and hope that their first clue isn't a gunshot in their own direction.
Pretty high stress job, isn't it? That's why they deserve respect. |
