What do I do if a cop car who has had his lights on for a while comes behind me?

I'm getting my license in a couple days, and I was just thinking about this. If a cop car who seems to be on an emergency call and I'm in the left lane and I have no where to go, should I speed up so the cop can get to where it needs to be (by passing te cars on the right), or should I keep going my same speed and wait for an opening to get over?
Additional Details
I know that I should move over, but what if there is no room because of semis. We have alot in Illinois and not a lot of shoulder room alon the left side

Generally, just put your turn signal on and do what seems reasonable to get out of his way as quickly as possible. If that means slowing down to slip behind someone, do it. If that means speeding up a little, even a few miles over the limit to get in front of someone, do it. That doesn't mean drive 100 mph looking for an opening!
He's more interested in getting past your than giving you a ticket. The important thing is to be doing your best to get out of his way, and not being one of the idiots who seem oblivious to the fact that he's back there. It helps to check your mirrors to see if he's trying to direct you. It also helps if you can safely gesture your intentions, like pointing to a "hole" that you want to slip into. |

If you are in North America, put on your right turn signal, move over to the right as far as it is safe to do, even if that means driving on the shoulder. Then slow down and stop until the police vehicle has passed. Do not speed up! |

turn on your blinkers and pull over to the right like you are supposed to. |

before a cop is even close to being behind you, you should already be pulled over as far as possible and stopped to the right.
people get these ideas that you only pull over completely for fire trucks and ambulances, but we are emergency services also! |

You shouldn't be in the left lane to begin with, unless you are passing. If you ARE ;passing, continue to pass the vehicle (car, semi, etc.) then pull over to the right. People who ride in the left do nothing but create hazards and aggravation. It is for PASSING. |

Try and pull to the right, if not try and clear an area so he or she can get through (I.E, pull to the left side of the road and stop.). Sometimes it may take a while, such as in a traffic jam to make room, but just do them a favor and not make some stupid move that will cause an accident for you, other vehicles or the emergency Vehicle |
