Unfortunately the security service Mi5, is being used in conjunction with the police to pry into every facet of a private citizen's life in the uk, far from targetting terrorist groups they believe in keeping tabs on everyone through mass dna database information and regarding the citizens of the whole of the uk as potential threats, if the goverment was serious about terrorism in this country they would have got rid of the clerics of hate who incite violence against our country and people,
instead the Labour government has allowed thousands of terrorists into this country knowing from the outset that they pose a serious threat to our safety, why is this? is it because there are elements within government that wish to foment fear and violence? this goverment and it's secret service really are the stuff of nightmares!

The remit of MI5 is internal security and intelligence gathering. Traditionally this has meant they have concentrated on threats to "National Security". What exactly constitutes a threat to national security is something which has been the focus of constant reinterpretation since the end of the cold war. Initially this lead to an expansion of the role of MI5 to include counter terrorism. However more recently, since the IRA cease-fire (not that the IRA is the only terrorist threat to the UK, and not that the IRA cease-fire seems to be holding), MI5 has been searching for a new role. Currently efforts include a proposed expansion into intelligence gathering in areas traditionally managed by the Police such as drug trafficking and other serious and organised crime. Their moto is "Regnum Defende" defend the realm (derived from the directive issued to the Service in 1952 by the then Home Secretary David Maxwell Fyfe).
The Security Service Act 1989 (new window) defines our role as being "the protection of national security and, in particular, its protection against threats from espionage, terrorism and sabotage, from the activities of agents of foreign powers and from actions intended to overthrow or undermine parliamentary democracy by political, industrial or violent means."

In pursuing the role set out by the Act, the Security Service's corporate aims are to:

* frustrate terrorism;
* prevent damage to the UK from foreign espionage and other covert foreign state activity;
* frustrate procurement by proliferating countries of material, technology or expertise relating to weapons of mass destruction;
* watch out for new or re-emerging types of threat;
* protect Government's sensitive information and assets, and the Critical National Infrastructure (CNI);
* reduce serious crime through assistance to law enforcement agencies;
* assist the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in the discharge of their statutory functions;
* build Service capability and resilience.

It was formed in 1909 as the Secret Service Bureau. MI5 is Military Intelligence, Section 5, the United Kingdom's counter-intelligence and security agency. It is part of the intelligence machinery alongside the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6), Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the Defence Intelligence Staff (DIS). All come under the direction of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The service has a statutory basis in the Security Service Act 1989 and the Intelligence Services Act 1994. Its remit includes the protection of British parliamentary democracy and economic interests, counter-terrorism and counter-intelligence within the UK. While mainly concerned with internal security, it does have an overseas role in support of its mission.

What they do isn't secret, just how they do it, and what they find out while they are doing it.

Their website has a section that may help you.

they dont stop terrorist threats...there are hardly any terrorist threats. they just pretend that there are lots of dangerous terrorists...so when we are not killed by "Al Qaeda" we think the government has saved us from something.
