It's known as being "Mirandized".

The following is a minimal Miranda warning, as outlined in the Miranda v Arizona case.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to be speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense.

The following is a much more verbose Miranda warning, designed to cover all bases that a detainee might encounter while in police custody. A detainee may be asked to sign a statement acknowledging the following.

You have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions. Do you understand?
Anything you do say may be used against you in a court of law. Do you understand?
You have the right to consult an attorney before speaking to the police and to have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future. Do you understand?
If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. Do you understand?
If you decide to answer questions now without an attorney present you will still have the right to stop answering at any time until you talk to an attorney. Do you understand?
Knowing and understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing to answer my questions without an attorney present?

It depends on 1) your department. The wording can vary slightly based on advice from the city attorney but essentially the individual needs to be advised of their 5th amendment right against self incrimination and their right to legal counsel if needed. 2) it also depends on the crime. If there are not being questioned in relation to the crime outside of basic fact finding they do not need to be Marindized.

Your under arrest. thats all really. if i wanna question the suspect about the crime, then i have to mirandize them. otherwise nope, don't have to and won't do it. just an unnecessary step.

i beleive they say what is expected by law ..to protect them from the frivolous law suits..and after all their hard work...our so called laws ..let them loose again..but in all honestly..the majority of our servants that protect us..police..armed forces..fire fighters.and all the men and women that do their best to take care of us...i bet..every night..when they have placed their life on the line..if they get to go home to their family..they say..THANK YOU LORD FOR GETTING ME THUR ANOTHER DAY AND WAS ALLOWED 1 MORE DAY OF TIME TO SEE MY FAMILY AND HOLD AND BE WITH MY FAMILY
