What do prison inmates do to keep themselves busy?

I spent a year and a half in Federal prison. As I am educated, I wrote my own appeal rather than pay 8k for a lawyer who didn't or wouldn't really help.

Once other prisoners learned that I could write effectively, I assisted with appeals, parole packets and helped with college coursework for guards and other prisoners. I led a Toastmasters International club to help young prisoners learn how to express themselves in a positive and effective manner, weightlifted, played cards, and worked in the prison carpentry shop. Other prisoners spent lots of time playing cards, sleeping, getting in trouble, watching TV, radio, etc.

Fed prison isn't as bad as state. However, I tell you this: it is so hard to get a good job or a job at all after prison that many go back to crime. I have been working so hard, but no luck for a job. Instead, I work for me now. Sad thing, but once you go to prison in this nation no one wants to let you start over. Remember that when you see people who need a job.

If they let you, you can lie in your cell and quietly go through a flashback of your whole life. I also read all of Word of Honor, and some of Pet Sematary. Your family may visit you, and look at you like a zoo monkey behind glass!

That is just a few things inmates do to occupy themselves in prison.

I have an Uncle that read Louis L'Amour western novels while he was in prison. I haven't been to jail for long periods of time so I am just going on others experiences. My goal is to not ever go back to jail.

It depends on what prison.

It depends where they are housed. If minimum security then they are able to mingle with others and have time to take classes or do various chores. It really depends on the prison and the guidelines set by the state as to what they are allowed to do. Other than that, I suppose they read, play cards, sleep, eat and basically try to keep from getting into more trouble.

The ones that want to do there time and get out gets jobs ,like in kitchen,some prisons have farms,inmates can get jobs with maint.go to school,then there are the ones that never change try everything to get involved in scams dealing,gambling etc. A lot of correctional facilities also have organised sports.Some places have crafts like leather shops,depends on the prisoin the security level they are onhow much activity they can have.
