Yes, they did this with some of the detainees at Guantanamo. It's happened elsewhere with hunger strikes. It also happens in mental institutions.
What they use is a nasogastric tube. That goes into your nose, curves down into your throat, and down into your stomach. They can then pump nutrients into your stomach. This is also a common medical procedure in hospitals for people who are physically too sick to eat, like people in intensive care.
Since the tube goes in the nose, a person can't refuse it just by keeping their mouth shut.
It is probably the safest way to feed someone who refuses to eat, but if someone's trying to refuse the tube, it is still fairly violent and a little dangerous. It was enough to convince the inmates at Guantanamo to end their hunger strike though...they gave up on trying to starve themselves to death. If they'd have been a little more persistant, they might well have succeeded in giving themselves a fatal injury, but it takes tremendous willpower to resist the forcefeeding process day after day. |
