They should have a far more harsh punishment than at present.
They know that they could kill someone but choose to drive anyway. This should result in a minimum charge of manslaughter, or murder as they know they will more likely kill.
At the very least, they should be banned for at least 3 years and made to see pictures of dead bodies as a result of drink driving deaths.
Even be made to visit a real fatality that has involved drink.
I too have lost someone close due to a drink driver,,,,, if what I mentioned had been done, my friend may still be alive today. |

Having been hit on my motorbike some years ago by a drink driver, I have no time for them at all. Drink drivers deserve all that they get and more. Most of Europe has a zero tolerance for drink drivers and whilst I enjoy a drink as much as anyone, I believe we should follow suit and not allow drinkers to drive. |

selfish!
i bet they would be the 1st to scream and shout if it was a member of their family that was murdered.
it is murder because they willing drank and then drove.
if i took a gun out with me and then willed someone they would argue the pre meditation part.
why else would i have a gun with me unless i intend to shoot it.
selfish careless mindless fools who think that they are different and it does not apply to them.
ha ha i am so hard i did not get caught attitude but when they are caught they moan about the menial sentence/fine they get.
just how do you put a price on some body's life! |

I've answered a similar question to this before, and I'll say the same again - It is one of the most selfish acts a person can participate in!
Any person who blatantly gets behind the wheel in the full knowledge that they have been drinking alcohol and then proceeds to drive has one of the worst weapons in their hands!
We all know that when we've had a couple of drinks we don't have full control and that things can be distorted in our vision, our brains are slower at responding to what we see and hear - then get behind 2 ton of steel and you have an instant weapon with the potential for mass distruction.
Not only do people get maimed and murdered on our roads by drink drivers...the people they leave behind are left numb, shocked and feeling robbed.
The sentencing of these offenders is NEVER harsh enough...I have to speak to victims and witnesses of these wasters, and worse to the relatives who lose their loved ones because somebody fancied a swift one or two and then decided to drive home or some such. |

They are a disgrace. There shouldn't be a limit that you can drink. You shouldn't be able to drink anything before driving. They are just ignorant selfish B******s!!!!! |

Sorry to hear of your loss, i believe it's tantermount to murder and the courts should punish them as such. |

The law in not strick enough on these people. They drink and drive and point blank, "they don't care". Perfect example, here in El Paso, a girl was involved in a car crash that killed her 4 passengers, including one girl expecting a baby, and the only one who survived was the highly intoxicated driver and in all, all she got was 2 years, yes, two years. Where is the justice in that. Like I said, those drunk drivers do not care until they kill someone, and then sometimes they still don't care!!!!!!!!!! |

lock them up and throw away the key. Getting behind the wheel whilst drunk is surely attempted murder. |

I think anyone caught drinking & driving should have their car seized by the police, banned for 2 years & have to re-sit their test before being allowed to drive again.
However, if they cause a death they should also have a jail sentence for causing death by careless driving & a life-time ban on driving.
I think every time a person gets behind the wheel & drives, knowing they are over the limit it is the same as attempted murder. If it was just themselves they were risking then it wouldn't matter but it is always some poor innocent that suffers. |

Drink Drivers are scum bags, who cares whether the statistics say you are more likely to have an accident if you scratch your back side. I go out of my way to nick drink drivers, if you have seen some of the carnage I have seen, as in, having to scrape people off of the road, having to tell parents, wives or husbands that their loved ones have been killed by a selfish idiot. The problem is the drink driver never gets killed, but innocents do. I once had to deal with an accident where the driver was drunk killed a couple and their young baby and then wanted to fight me to get away.
Get a life don't have any if you are going to drive. |

I have no doubt that a drunk driver should be treated as any criminal who goes out tooled up. The law is soft and it allows murder on our roads to be punished less than not having a TV licence or paying your council tax.
If you are caught having drunk over the limit or no insurance the least you should get is 3 years prison and 5 year ban. Once released a new driving test. If you are drunk and cause an accident then 5 years minimum and an 8 year ban. If you cause death then life can be the only punishment and never allowed to drive again. |

I think drink drivers should be penalised and punished a lot more than they do now, they seem to just get off easy all the time. I think DDs are careless, thoughtless, idiots. They never end up killing themselves, only other innocent people. |

They should be banned from driving again after being caught. It's a good lesson. |

You mean drunk driver and I don't worry about the questions that they post. I would happily vote for a law to give the death penalty to drunk drivers who kill someone else. Those who only injure other people should get life in prison. Okay, maybe that is a little harsh, but now you know how I feel about drunk drivers. |

I'm so sorry about your loss, my friends daughter was very seriously hurt by a drink driver - she's still in hospital since Jan. She very nearly lost both her legs and the doctors reckon she'll never walk again!!
Needless I'm here to say that ALL drink drivers are some of the lowest people there are around. I don't think there is EVER a "safe" amount of alcohol in your body to be driving afterwards. And I agree that drink driving is tantamount to murder. |

I have to agree with you totally. They should have harsher penalties for drunk drivers. My uncle is a drunk and he ran over top of someones fender and ran. He only got 17 months in jail and worked for the parks dept. I believe he should have gotten alot longer and he went to drinking the day he got out. He still drinks and shows no remorse for anything he has done under the influence. I think that with the programs they have to help people they should make them go and if they do not quit drinking get locked up plus have their names put up in every liquor store and any place that sells liquor and not let them be allowed to purchase it. sorry about your loss too. |

I think that drunk drivers should be severely punished. Where a death has occurred as a result of their reckless negligence they should be charged with vehicular manslaughter. I am sick to death of hearing consumption of alcohol being used as an excuse for any transgression of the law. In my opinion that makes the crime worse, not excusable. No one is forced to drink, they make that decison for themselves, and should be punished accordingly. |

If you can afford to go out and have a few drinks, then you can afford taxi fare. If you can't afford taxi fare, then stay close to home. Full Stop. It's not rocket science--cars are big and dangerous; alcohol impairs reactions; 1+1=2. It's like playing with a loaded gun--you may drive 100 times after drinking a few and cause no harm; but on the 101st time...
One of my sisters drove drunk one too many times; she had an accident and now our family is short one sister... not the one driving; the one in the car with her. I ask why?!! For fun?!! ... tell me, do you think the *fun* they had that day was worth living every day since knowing you killed one of your own? |

I think that due to the impending doom this nation is heading for their ought to be devices on EVERY car so you can't start the vehicle if you have been drinking. A family of five was killed by a drunk driver with 5 d.w.i's just this week in the city I live in. It's one of the most despicable, atrocious acts to drive drunk. Drunk drivers are in the same category as child molesters. |

Drink driving is an offence that shouldnt be tolerated as it can lead to the death of innocent people, the laws should be strickter toward the offenders.
The rules are simple DONT DRINK AND DRIVE landlords need to uphold the law or lose thier licences. |

i have lost people too, so i know your loss! but i do believe that all they do to you for a d.u.i. is totally out of control! from the way the police exaggerate the situation, to the hypocrite lawyers and judges who are lushes, but can take your freedom away for drinking, to the outrageous fines, and ridiculous 6-month course that teaches you absolutely nothing and the cost for it. to all the bull that you have to go thru at DMV. another way our rights are being stripped. |

Hmm, seeing as though I am 23 and one of those people I think they're ok. Let me start off with this. A study tested the effects of different drugs and how they impair our driving. They found that people who were "drunk" had slower peripheral reactions. Sorry if spelling is wrong, typing quick! I think that most of the accidents caused by drunk drivers are accidents that sober people would make at the same rate. Looking for a cd, checking cell phone, etc. One of my friends died as well. I think he was intoxicated, but probably not drunk, he hit an eighteen wheeler and died. I think he just reached down for something and crashed on accident, not due to alcohol. So, for the people that need advice for breathalyzers, I think who cares? I hope they are not people who get smashed and drive, doubt it. Probably the usual social drinker that drives safer (aka sped limit) after a few drinks. I dislike the drinking laws here, but I guess it's their way of catching the very drunk people. |

I feel that yes drink drive is inexcusable but i also think more could be done to reduce it and as technology fires ahead the best thing would be a breath test in every car that only the driver can use due to measure of dna in their breath. If you dont pass then the car will not start. Surely this would have bearing on drink drive offenders |
