This comment from a bbc article regarding whether the British police should be armed. I think this lady is full of ****. My dad has worked in both police and security work. I think in either role, a person that is supposed to protect, should be properly equipped.
Please don't arm the British Police! What Natalie from Australia has forgot to mention is the spreading American gun culture here. The average Australian policeman is unapproachable and sadly leans towards an "Us and Them" mentality. Armed police haven't reduced crime here, now criminals just shoot back or shoot first. Worse still the mentality is now dwindling down to security guards who are armed and we now see shopping centre security guards wearing flack gear and batons to look menacing - most of them are kids in their mid-twenties. Let us hope that England doesn't drops to this level. The police there are the most approachable and respectable I have ever come across in my worldly travels, that show genuine concern for the public and can be relied upon to do the right thing. You do not need another force of "gun totting cowboys" whereby the public looses confidence in them. Guns are never the answer.

That's bull. A police officer should be allowed to protect himself, what's wrong with approaching a cop who has a weapon?
I think that the only reason people don't want police to have guns is that they want police to feel more intimidated by things they shouldn't be.
A police officer with a gun has more confidence and therefor can show his authority much better. Just because he has a gun doesn't mean he's going to hurt people, just because he doesn't have a gun doesn't mean bad guys won't shoot him.
Police should be able to have guns, the bad guys always will. |

Wow. I can't imagine a world where police officers don't have guns.
I know that I sure feel safer knowing they have guns here. If they didn't, only the crooks would have them and then we'd all be screwed. Maybe people act differently in England than they do in the USA or something..lol.
I think it should be mandatory that we all have guns. There has been so much crazy, unpredictable crimes lately in this whole country, that someone close by having a gun, could have helped alot of the people who have died in shopping mall shooting sprees, and campus shootings, etc. I used to feel just like you do about guns..but now I have changed my way of thinking, and it's a shame really. I wish we lived in a world without guns and violence, but that fact is, we don't. All of us don't own guns, so it's nice to know that if you call a cop to help you if someone is breaking into your house at night, they will have a gun. I don't think that makes the public lose any confidence in them at all. It gives me more confidence. (Especially when most cops are idiots...or at least no more "clever" than I am.) At least they have their guns. |

Many people call China a "police state". However, Chinese police do not carry batons, tasers, guns, or wear flak vests. The reason is that the Chinese population is not armed with guns, so the risk to police is greatly reduced.
Maybe the West needs to learn from China. Disarm your populations. |
