What do you think will happen to me after serving a 17 year old alcohol?

Tonight at my job at a restaurant I should have id'd these two people but I didn't because I thought they were definitely of age. Turns out one of them was 17 and now I'm scared of what can happen to me and/or the restaurant. The only person who knows is the boss's son but he said he wouldn't say anything. He got into a bit of an argument with the 17 year old and his friend. What do you think is the most likely outcome of this? Also, do you know if there are any previous cases of a restaurant or person being sued over something like this? I don't think they got into any accidents afterward.

Added: I know it was irresposible guys, I feel very bad about it. Also, I'm in Canada so that might change some of the laws you're talking about.
Aaalso, this guy was a drug addict whos ID was all scratched up from blow.
Can the 17 year old press charges/is it likely that he will?

It is extremely unlikely that the 17 year old will press charges. Basically, if he got home ok last night without getting in some kind of trouble, the worst that will happen is that he will see your restaurant as a convenient place to buy alcohol, and will tell all his other underage liquor-loving friends.

You are under no obligation to turn yourself in to anyone. If the boss's son uses his knowledge of your error to blackmail you, he's committing a crime that worse than anything you did!

Mostly, just be more careful next time. One honest mistake is unlikely to bite you, but a series of these mistakes will eventually catch up to you.

you can get arrested for unlawfully dealing with person under 21...criminal charge
you can get the same charge in civil court for the state liquor authority...civil charge
your employer can lose his liquor license....civil fines

when i arrest a clerk for selling to underage, we charge both laws...criminal and state liquor law...we forward a copy of the places liquor license and go to hearing...usually its about $4,000 fine for the first offense (for the business) second offense 30 day suspension...third offense revokation of liquor license

Depending on state law, the fines are different. Here in Oklahoma, it's a 10,000 fine for the business and a 1,000 fine for the individual who sold it, PLUS either a felony or a misdemeanor on your record for the rest of your life. And normally you get fired...Good luck..and yes, there would be a case against this, or else there wouldn't be a law.

You can be fired and fined. If the bosses son keeps his mouth shut, you're fine. But thats assuming he does. You should probably be up front with your boss and tell him what happened. You might get fired, but at least your conscious will be clear after it.
