I know someone who has failed to pay a ticket from the police (minor traffic violation). It's been several months to a year. What do they need to do if they don't know where their ticket is and need to pay this? What consequences might they face for failing to pay on time? We live in NC.

Well there could be a warrant out on them now. Contempt of court they call it. They'll have to pay the fine, plus interest and court cost, and another fine for not showing up for court! What they should of done, was just send in their fine in the first pace. Plead NO CONTEST, that's all. You don't need to go to court, unless you want to fight it. Now if they get pulled over, they'll go to jail, for not showing up or sending in their fine. Then they might have to wait a day or two, before the judge See's them. Maybe if they go to the court house and give them their plate number, and find the ticket, they might just be able to pay it off. Try that and keep your fingers crossed. |

Relax. Many cities depend upon the additional income from this type of mistake. Wait a few more years, then ask a cop to radio in to learn if you have a warrant issued.

Depends on ur local laws but,
It's common for:
An outstanding arrest warrant can be issued by the court and...
If you are ever stopped for any traffic checks,etc.
You will be arrested (if they run a check on you) and, hauled off to jail.
At this point, it's better to just pay the fines, plus whatever else late charges attached. |

I don't know about NC but in CA you get a warrant for your arrest for any and all unpaid traffic violations. Consequences can be things like : loss of license, Jail time, Hefty fees etc. I'd recommend that your friend contact the local county courthouse or traffic violations center and see what his or her options are. If they ahve it on file which they will they can give him traffic violation number and he or she can use that number to pay their fine or take care of what ever it is they need to take care of. |

they get a warrent put out for their arrest, you need to call your court house and see if theres a warrent and talk to the court clerk.
usually all you have to do is ask (before the ticket is due of course) and they will extend you like months,
i have one from last month they extended out to feb alls i had to do was go up there and ask.

Most likely a warrant will be issued for their arrest. It will be called a bench warrant if it is issued by the judge. I would contact the court forthwith and pay it. |

I live in nc too, i'd go to the magistrates office and find the ticket, but my ex didnt pay speeding tickets and went to jail for 45 days. I'd get a lawyer or something to negociate them out of it. |

i would contact my local police dept. they can direct you in the proper direction. as far as the penalty for paying up late .....it would probably depend on the offense and past history . there could be a warrant out for your arrest ...stiffer fine....loss of license...etc. |

They need to contact the court ASAP. Otherwise they will end up in handcuffs the next time they get a minor ticket. They need to tell the court they forgot - have a good excuse (I used that my grandmother had passed away, which was true, and I brought a newspaper article to prove it - they just let me pay the fine).
They appreciate that you didn't make them waste time and money chasing your down. Best luck. |
