What happens if you don't pay your parking tickets??
Find answers to your legal question.

What happens if you don't pay your parking tickets??

This is a huge fight between me and my finace. He acts likes it's no big deal and I just got $900 worth of parking tickets in the mail and that's not all of them. He just keeps ignoring them and they keep doubling!! He acts like it's not big deal and doesn't affect anything. I am debt free and ticket free!! I want him to start paying off all this crap and he keeps telling me it doesn't affect anything..... it's a goverment scam... Sometimes I can't believe he is 30... he acts like hes 3!!! What happens if you don't pay your parking tickets?? I keep telling him they are going to arrest him. We live in Philadelphia!
Thanks!!
Additional Details
This is all on him. We do not share cars or insurance.
The kicker is he already JUST renewed his drivers license and they didn't do anything!!
He did all this crap before we met. He had a broken down car taken out of his apartment building.
They were not suppose to take it, he was fixing it and then he said screw it.

There was a case in California or Texas (sorry, I can't exactly remember which state) where this woman never paid her parking tickets, she got arrested and owed more than $10,000, because if you don't pay them they will charge you a late fee, depending on the state you are, could be double the amount of the ticket. Lets say a ticket of $15 could easily go up to $240. Or a $0.80 toll ticket (for not paying a toll in Chicago) you could easily pay $120. If I were you I would start paying them now, if they are on your name, and Don't let your boyfriend use your car....bad bad bad idea!!, He won't pay anything because are not in her name and you'll end up stuck in debt.

Possible sanctions include:

1. Not being able to renew his driver's license.
2. Not being able to renew his car registration.
3. Arrest.

I agree with you about his acting like he's 3. You might want to reconsider marriage to Mr. No Big Deal.

Yes they will eventually arrest him and he will not only have to pay the tickets off but bail, court cost, lawyers fees, and he could have his license suspended.

TECHX69
At some point he'll get to be a guest of your local police's less than four star accomodations. Then he'll still have to pay the money plus court costs. Tell me is this his money or your money that we're talking about? Because at some point I think he'll be hitting on you to help pay them(and any other extra fines)off. Seriously, DON'T pay a cent for this guy concerning this, he brought it on by himself.

kja63
First, who owns the car that the tickets are on? If you do, then you are responsible for paying them all even if you didn't get the tickets. If he owns the car, then it's his responsibility.

Failure to pay parking tickets will result in an outstanding warrant for your arrest. The fines will continue to multiple. Once arrested, you will be booked and processed through the courts. The judge will require you to pay all the outstanding fines. Your car could be impounded as well and then you must pay the impound fees to get your car back.

And really honey, if your fiance is this immature and irresponsible about parking tickets, how will he be when it comes time to pay school and property taxes (another government scam in his mind?) and take the children for their immunizations (a conspiracy plot by the government to infect us with disease?)....

I suggest you think long & hard about marrying this 3-year old (your words, not mine).

divorce!

He probably already has a warrant out for his arrest. A lawyer will cost him more than the tickets. He should pay them.

BEWARE OF THE BOOT!

Vehicles with three (3) or more unpaid parking tickets are eligible to be booted after their owners receive a series of notices.

Boot crews patrol streets in Center City, University City and neighborhood commercial areas.

Please note: if your vehicle is booted, you must pay the total amount due, including all fees, fines and penalties, before the boot can be removed. This will include a $100 boot fee.

Vehicles are not released until the driver presents certification of proper registration, insurance and driver’s license. You must also pay the total amount due, including all outstanding tickets, fees, fines and penalties, before you can take possession of your vehicle. The tow fee is $100 plus storage of $11.50 for each of the first five days and $17.25 for each day thereafter.

Vehicles impounded through the Live Stop program must also satisfy all outstanding tickets at the Traffic Court.

Towed vehicles are taken to one of PPA’s Impoundment Lots. For street addresses and phone numbers, please see our FAQ. Vehicles that are not claimed within 21 days are sold at public auction.

You don't say who the car is registered to, but whom ever will go on to a scofflaw list. The car can be impounded by the city. The license of the owner can be suspended, and if none of this happens then when it comes time to re-register the car you or him will not be able to until you produce a receipt showing that the fines have been adjudicated. If your fiance is that irresponsible you might want to reconsider your future plans. What other kind of financial bind we he get you into once you are married. Tell him to get rid of the debt or get rid of him.

They can assess fine and put you in jail, but where they realy hit you is when you go to renew you driver's license, or get a brake tag. Either you pay the total amount owed [including fines], or you can forget about getting your driver's license, or getting that brake tag for your car.

I don't think they will arrest him. However, you or him, whoever the tickets are made out to, will have the amount taken from their tax returns, or.... they could garnish wages. Another thing I've seen some cities do: send them to a collection agency who will in-turn report them to a credit bureau, which will harm your credit! Are you sure you want to marry this idiot?

Tell your boyfriend not to fly anytime soon.
I have been in the parking garage of a few airports.
When you go in they have these huge signs at Midway and Ohare that state that 'these premises are monitored by the law enforcement'

They will put a huge BOOT on your car and you get the boot off when you pay your tickets. I would guess Philly has a like styled program too.

I dont know if he can get arrested or not but tell him NOT to call you when he does and that he cannot use YOUR car if they impound his!
In Kentucky, the posted names in the paper and tipsters would get $50.00 for turning in a violator (win win for the state and your enemies).
p.s. DO NOT LET HIM DRIVE YOUR CAR. If he cares this much for his own car, imagine what he will do to YOURS! I would call and check and make sure you dont have any parking tickets floating around if you have let him drive. THe tickets follow the car not the driver.
One last thing the state might file to take his income tax (state)

Just Me
Eventually, if not already, a bench warrant will be issued for his arrest. Then he might grow up.

They will one day arrest him. Or when he has to renew his license, the fee will be normal renewal fee + all outstanding tickets + fines

he'll find out when it's time to renew his license. Bring buckets of cash!

I think your bigger issue is are you marrying someone of questionable ethical standards?

I put a downpayment towards a vehicle in California, but it turns out it was a lemon. The car lot told me I could trade-it in after six months, but when the six months was approaching they repossessed it from me. I did use it for a trade-in and they resold the truck. Nine months later I received a parking ticket in the mail which the new owner had got. I called the collections agency and they told me that I never filed a Release of Liability with DMV and was therefore, responsible. I spoke with a supervisor who told me to file the R.O.L. and I would no longer be held responsible for the ticket, so I did. Now, 3.5 years later a different agency is harassing me for this same ticket, and the IRS has placed a lien on my taxes. The agency told me I did not file the ROL when the truck was repossessed so I am responsible. The car lot is closed down, I never received a letter of repossession, and I was never the legal owner. What can I do?
