What happens if you get a speeding ticket when you have your learners permit?

If you plead guilty you (or your parents) will just pay a fine and you'll get some points on your record.

Here's what I'd do, though... Go to court early with a parent, and go see the DA. Be super polite and calm, and explain that you weren't going that incredibly fast and that you are sorry it happened.

I'd be willing to bet that there's a VERY good chance the DA will lower the charge to a non moving violation (which means something like having a non working tail light) and you won't have nearly any points on your record. You'll STILL have to pay a fine, but it won't be so bad.

If that doesn't work, just offer to go to defensive driving school. That's something that people can do from time to time in lieu of getting points, and it's just a 4 (on average) hour long class that costs less than 100$ where you watch a lot of videos about traffic safety.

Whatever happens you will be out some money, but there are definitely ways to make it not go on your record.

Edit: Unless you were going like 20-30 over the speed limit you shouldn't have any problems getting your license. Going ten over is very minimal.

Learners permit is the same as a drivers license as far as the legal side of it goes.

My advice is to NOT pay the ticket or plead guilty! Go to court plead not guilty. If you were ticketed by a state officer, chances are they will not show. If it was a local city officer, the chance of them showing is higher. You can also ask the prosecutor to lower the charge if you feel the ticket cannot be beat in court. You can get this ticket dropped to a "driving in an unsafe manner" which has no points. "The Point System" is used by each state to keep track of driving offenses, insurance companies will use this information to raise your insurance premium. The best thing to do is to fight the ticket, if you do not feel comfortable with doing yourself, hiring an attorney is usually a waste of time and money. Write the court a letter, put in a plea of not guilty. When your court date arrives, ask to speak with the prosecutor or legal body in the court (if no prosecutor is present). If this is your first offense you will be ok and likely will get the charge lessened.
