The other night, me and my roommates were having a party and the cops showed up. For good reason, I made the decision to answer the door and speak to them since I am over 21. I do realize that I did not have to answer it, But like I said I had good reason to to take the other route and compile with the officers. They took my information and told me the usual accountability story. Everything was fine after that. My question is, does anyone know exactly what the police can legally do if they are called back to the same location on the same night? Thanx.

it usually doesn't come down to arrest, but the fines can be tremendous, especially for multiple return trips to the same location. Arrests can be made, usually under public disturbance ordinances, but I have never known anyone stupid enough to fail to comply with officer's request to turn it down a second time. Jail is not fun, and going to jail for something as stupid as failing to turn it down would be sheer stupidity on the part of the noise maker. Give your neighbors and the cops a break, turn it down. As law enforcement I can tell you that noise complaints and judging disputes between neighbors is a huge waste of resources, I would rather spend my time attempting to keep crime from happening, not telling people to turn down the volume. By the way, if I had knocked on your door as part of a neighbor complaint, I knew you were in the house and you did not answer the door, I would assume that you were under medical distress and simply come in, if the door was locked I would pry it open, all in the name of citizen safety. Or I would simply go to your outside circuit breaker box and shut off the power to the house, you would have come out then. Not answering won't work. |
