Find answers to your legal question.

What if you are pulled over and you don't have your license with you?

If you forgot it at home, can you give the officer your name or license number?
Additional Details
My proof of insurance stays in the vehicle.

They can check it through their dispatch by your name and date of birth. Dispatch will give a physical description as is on driver's license and you better match up or you can be arrested for giving false information.

You are required to have your license with you when you drive. You could be charged with driving without a license and be asked to bring it in, fined, or just be warned about it. Make a habit of carrying it when you go out.

No, you are required by law to have it with you whenever you operate your motor vehicle.

They will write a ticket for driving without a license. When you go to court, you can present it to the Judge and with a little luck, it will be dismissed with no fine, but they can still fine you. You are required by law to have it on you when driving.

They will write you ticket, if the officer were unable to verifed your identity with a second ID.

I live in UK. I never ever carry my licence or insurance and do not intend ever to do so. The only time i have been required to produce it I was given 7 days to hand in to a nominated police staion near my home. For the same reason i will never ever carry an official ID card. As a free born Briton there is no reason why I should. this applied in WWll when no one carried one anyway in spite of it being illegal not to. if we stick to this they can not gaol us all

Boo
If he can check it out, you may be okay, if not, expect a ticket.

It is up to the officer, if you have no outstanding violations and it is an honest mistake, a verbal warning. A lot depends on dept. policy.

They will run a check on you and if it comes back that you do have a valid license and there are no outstanding warrants it's up to the discretion of the officer.

It can result in a charge of not having your license in your posession or a verbal warning. Your attitude will often make the difference.

If you have a reasonable police person. they will work with you and allow you to bring the driving license to them. but actually since you get caught without it it is an offense to be without your driver's license at all times.

You will probably receive a ticket. Some states will permit you to produce a valid license within 24 hours or at the hearing and the ticket will be dismissed. Onther states, like NJ, consider the act of not haveing your licnse with you a separate offense and will fine you even if you can produce a valid license at later time.

The same goes for your registration and insurance card.

Most police today have a computer in their vehicles and can check your license number (if you can give it to them) or your full name and date of birth to determine whether or not you have a valid license.

You will probably get a citation to appear in court and, if you are able to produce your license at the court appearance, the citation will be dismissed.

It's possible that the officer will accept that, as long as they can verify you are who you say you are. In my jurisdiction we do not have a law that says you have to have it with you, but you must identify yourself and we can look it up (driver's license picture and all). Be advised that a lot of jurisdictions require that you have your license with you at all times, just like your proof of insurance!

LadyTazzy
You gotta have it with you. License, proof of insurance, and registration.

Not Sure, could vary from state to state.

You should always have your license with you for identification.

You will be given a ticket for driving without a license.

In the first place you've commited an offence since you don't have a license. No the law is clear that any one should be having his/her license. Please conceed a mistake and abid by the laws of the land.

You will most likely get a ticket. if you have another from of picture ID and know your Drivers License number it may help you out a bit.

Max
