Federal background checks are called "full-field" background checks, and they are very extensive. This can include extensive personal history, family history, work history, credit history, etc.
As for your second question, yes it will uncover any convictions you have had throughout your whole life. |

Depending on WHO is conducting the background check and WHAT it is for, it could be anything from a computer records check in Federal databases, to a full blown FBI investigation of your entire life. NOTHING is sealed against the latter. They can even INTERVIEW everyone you have ever met. |
