What is involved with obtaining a Top Secret Polygraph?

I may have the opportunity of obtaining a clearance for a position and may be required to conduct a TS Polygraph. Does any Yahooers have any experience and know what is involved with having this done? What kinds of questions do they ask? What do they look for?

Typically, you're going to fill out a long questionnaire that asks about what you've done in the past - especially relating to your potential work. Figure on 40+ pages of questions....
Once you're connected to the polygraph, they'll go over many of those questions to ensure you're not attempting deception (ie, lying). this part of the process will take maybe an hour or two.
It's changed over the last 20 years, so I don't have current information.

Mostly, they're going to look for criminal background, and leverage points that someone could use against you to get information. Specifically, substance abuse, gambling habits, severe debt.
They'll ask you about all that, but mostly, they'll be looking to see if you're being evasive at all in your answers. Generally speaking, you're better off being completely truthful about any awkward questions about your background and lifestyle than to try to dance around it, because they'll see that on the polygraph. |
