I m interested in becoming one someday if my local constabulary ever start recruiting and if i meet their standard, i d just like to know what its like being a copper? What can i expect to be doing day to day? How can i know if i m the suitable type of person?

I have no experience as a constable or "copper". I work as a police officer. Where i live a Constable does not really exist but the law says they are limited to "local" enforcement of laws and ordinances which means they are basically code enforcement officers. (barking dogs, grass in yards too tall, junked cars in yards/streets, etc).
If your Definition of constable is equal to police officer than you are looking at a job which requires you to use all of your senses at all hours of the day. You may work days, swing or night shift. You will go from chasing a bad guy to finding a lost child. You may stop to help someone who's car stalled on the road to have them start fighting you. You will have your adrenaline pumping while rushing to a hot call of a person with a gun or knife and while en-route you will be directed to head to a scene where a house has burned down and family needs help. You will see children who have been hurt and victims of horrible crimes, you will see things that are hard to explain.
If you do not want to help people, if you are unable to comfort people, if you are not able to cry in some form then this is not a job for you.
In my area, the understanding is that if an officer does not break down in some form after a major incident then they need to be off the road. |
