What is, or was the best firearm/gun (whatever you call it) that you have used?

I think it's great you have this curiosity!
All of the firearms mentioned thus far are
good suggestions. I like the S&W Model 65 .357 myself.
I can shoot big magnum rounds or .38 SWC target rounds.
And it's in stainless steel so I can take it backpacking.

the best thing you can do is find an NRA group in your area
that can teach you how to safely use a firearm. When my
gf became interested in shooting I taught her what I knew.
but I found a female firearms instructor and got
her some lesson at the range. It was a great experience
for her and I learned some thing too.

this also allows you try different firearms and find
one that's right for you.

Even if you have a family member that can take you to the
range a little formal training can go a long way.

your area.

Many Police Departments also offer safety training programs
that don't involve firearms.

My husband used to own an H & K 94 (sort of like an MP5) that was a lot of fun to shoot. It was a 9mm. Too big to carry concealed, but a lot of fun to shoot. We always had people stop and stare at us when we were at the range with it.

He also used to own an H & K P7 (9mm) that was sweet. It's a handgun with no kick, and felt good in my small hands.

We've also fired Berrettas, which are ok, and S & W handguns which aren't too bad.

If you don't know anything about guns, I suggest taking a course on gun safety. Don't go for a Glock as your first handgun. They have no external safety which means it's easy to shoot yourself with the gun. If you can afford one, get an H & K. You won't be dissapointed.

You are going to hear a lot of Glocks. Personally though, I love my Beretta PX4 .40S&W. the accuracy is great even at 30ft. My PX4 has been my favorite gun so far. To be honest though, buying a gun is like buying as car. you have to shop around a test them out until you find one that fits you. My fit was by Beretta PX4, yours could be a Smith&Wesson. Check out your local shooting range and rent some guns.

I carry a Springfield 1911 A-1 for my duty weapon at the present and it has become my all-time favorite. Good balance, reliable as all hell and great accuracy.

Sorry to hear that you are offended, but you really should get over yourself. Last time I checked, Yahoo is an American based operation, as Americans we have a right to own firearms. And with a board that caters to Police Officers some are inclined to ask our opinions because we are familiar with firearms.

That said, we don't really give two hoots about your opinion regarding the open discussion of firearms. Don't like it, don't read it!

DH, any weapon by H&K is an excellent choice! I used the MP5 in the military and I loved it. As for external safeties, I do not like them. Your safety is your index finger. Firearms should be properly locked and stored away from unauthorized hands.

My current issued weapon is a Glock 21. I prefer Glocks due to their simplicity and extreme durability.

for home defense, 12 gauge riot gun with slug followed by 00 buckshot. first shot aimed, second not.

for a handgun for a woman a revoler is better. go with 41 or larger caliber

Recommending a handgun on Yahoo to someone I've never met is as pointless as trying to teach teach 'em swimming or bike riding. Some things require hands-on experience. You need to go to where you can physically handle and shoot several different guns to see what suits you. Visit a gun shop or shooting range and ask questions. Most gun owners are very helpful and friendly.

depends on your use, if concealed carry I prefer the Glock 23. With the Glock you can interchange the barrels to upgrade calibers. I can get a .357 conversion for $120 into my .40. no need to even buy new clips...

I would recommend everyone to buy an AK-47. Why not? They are still considered one of the best rifles ever invented. They are rugged, reliable and very affordable. It is probably the most widely recognizable gun in the world. Unfortunately the civilian legal ones in the United States are only semi-automatic, which means they only shoot one shot per each pull of the trigger. They do not spray bullets like you see in Hollywood movies. They are much more accurate in this configuration though.

there will be no pat answer. it seams as if everyone likes a different gun.my best until i retired was the glock mdl.22.i fired several hundred rounds thru the gun and n4ever had a single malfunction.after i retired i got a springfield armory 1911 45.it is the best and most accurate gun i have ever shot.it has a great feel and a very smooth action.

My personal favorite (and the one I carry to work all the time) is my Springfield XD .40 S&W. I have recommended it to co-workers and family alike because its reliable, easy to use, and most of all, accurate. I trust my life to this firearm and it has yet to prove to me that its not up to the task of protecting me and others.

The finest handgun I think I ever fired was a Colt Python. It's a revolver, (a .357,) but it was so balanced and the trigger was velvet smooth that I could barely tell it was more powerful than a .22 short. Very easy handgun to fire.

For the semi-autos, you can't beat the Sig-Sauer P-226. I like 9mm over .45 because you can fit more rounds in the clip, there isn't as much recoil and it packs nearly the same punch. (I wouldn't want to get shot with either one, for those who split hairs over 9mm vs. .45.)

Rifles - I like Remingtons.

Shotguns - the Browning over & unders are great.

i loved my baretta 40. it was smaller and lighter, so it fit my girl hands pretty well, and it had enough stopping power for my taste.

i personally wouldn't reccommend anything under a 38, just because it does enough damage so you don't have to worry about shooting off multiple rounds to get the same effect.

(the numbers corrispond to the size of the bullet, bigger is better... but the bigger the bullet, the bigger and heavier the gun)

Ahhhh. Glad you asked......My favorite gun in my collection......The Romanian WASR 10 with 2 full 30 round clips,20 boxes of Wolf 7.62x39mm and a lot of full 2 liter soda bottles. I could sit around for.............Crap I need more ammo!
