What is the best police issued handgun to get?

You'll get as many different answers as you have posters.
It all comes down to personal preferences and fit.

I agree with galaxiexl above.
Next to a .45 cal, the 10mm and the .40 cals are popguns.
I want to know that if I have to shoot that what I shoot is going down and staying down.
My duty carry is a Sig P220 .45 cal.

If you want a Pistol that can knock over a large,enraged drunk;get yourself a Springfield armory M1911A1 45.ACP this has been in production for almost 100 years and ALL modern Semi Autos have borrowed or shamelessly copied this Pistol.Samuel Colt developed the ACP 45.Cartridge for the Marines fighting the Sandanistas in the 20's Their 38.revolvers just weren't cutting it.At 875 ft per second,it aint the fastest cause it don't have to be.What's hit with a 45.STAYS hit.Loaded with NATO "Ball" ammo a 45. is a house wrecker.There are hotter loads available through CCI and Winchester that would make you think twice about a 9MM.

you do not get a gun to look pretty.that is something a very unknowing person would state.you get a gun you know will fire and will always be reliable.most departments issue glocks in the mdl 22,.40 cal.i would take a glock over any of the guns named,they can not even come close to a glock.

First of all, to the poster who said Glocks are ugly. Gunfights are not a beauty contest and the Glock does hand stands around the CZ.

What you need to do is go a gun range and try a variety of different firearms. Everyone shoots differently and that affects the type of gun they like the best. I love Glock and Sig Sauer. For my money they are the best firearms made. I have a friend who swears by his Colt and another who only shoots Smith and Wesson. None of us is right and none of us is wrong. These are just the models we like to shoot. You couldn't pay me money to shoot a Smith and Wesson, but if that is what you like the best, that is what you should buy.

As for durability no one can hold a candle to the Glock.

After I answered I am reading some other input here. This is priceless. First of all the Glocks do not just go off in the holster. You have to pull the trigger. That is like a car starting up on it's own. To prove their reliability Glock staged a demonstration where they dropped a Glock multiple times from a height of 100 feet. The Glock never fired on its own. They then picked up the gun and walked over to a barrell and pulled the trigger. It worked flawlessly. They also do not freeze and break apart in cold weather. That is the funniest thing I have ever heard about a glock.

I have a full size Glock model 22 in .40 S&W, and it is one super gun. Sigs are quality guns,but just try and get parts for them if you are an average citizen. Glocks can be servive by many who are gunwise, and parts are plentiful and available. The gun itself is very light, reliable, and safe.Sigs are very expensive. Sigs are way too expensive, and their quality certainly is NOT greater than the Glock's

There are advantages to being able to carry your own weapon, although the cost to replace it after a shooting is a negative.

Any well known brand weapon are good. I would say the best thing is to look for the features you want.

After that the best weapon for you is the one that you can shoot accurately, and feel comfortable with.

Sig's, Rugers, Glocks, and some Smith's are great. The only one I would stay away from are the Smith and Wesson Sigmas. Total garbage!

glocks and sigs are great guns but sigs are 2x the price of glocks. glocks you can freeze, shoot in water or soaked in water, can run over with a car, bury in mud and still not jam on you. i myself have a glock 17 and a smith and wesson 649. i want to get a sig 220 sas or 239 sas but they are 800 and up.

Glocks are ugly. If you want a beautiful and reliable pistol I recommend the CZ-P01.

Let me clarify, what I meant by beautiful is in the design. The size is very manageable as is the weight. The disassembly is very easy as well. Disassembling and cleaning your firearm should not be difficult or complicated. Compared to the Glocks I've handled, the CZ feels more balanced and was easier for me to take apart and clean. So again, what I meant was beauty in design. I concede that words and phrasing were poorly chosen and that a more accurate statement would have been well designed, but I was feeling poetic at the moment.

If you are in a potentially cold climate then forget the Glock. The cold makes the plastic rigid and it will break apart if dropped. My favorite is the Colt .45 and if you like the shorter version they have the Colt commander and the Colt officers models. I've owned both and I loved them both. I had a Glock .40 but I got rid of it right after buying it. If you're looking at the higher clip capacity, do like I did and just carry more clips. I'm a darn good shot so I don't need much more than one clip.

Best handguns are probably the full size Glocks in 9mm or .40, Sig 226 and Beretta 92. If you want something smaller then medium size Glocks(19 or 23) and the P229 are great, as is the HK USPcompact.

wouldnt own a glock. they occasionally have problems with the firing mechanism on varying models and they can go off in the holster. The FBI had a major retro fit of glocks a few years ago because of that very problem. Stick with the S&W 40. very dependable and feels good in the hand.
