What is the best way to get my foot in the door as a corrections officer?

the first thing that you need to know is that there is a difference between a jail and a prison.

id recommend you look into attending maybe a citizens police academy if youre not in a rush and you have free time to spare. itll educate you on all aspects of law enforcement to include the jail and that would be more than helpful in any job interview.

but if youre set on the idea then look up the employment section for whatever county you work in. the sheriff is responsible for the jail.

the prisons will be ran by the state and would be on the state website. as far as juvenile facilities im not sure whether thats the county or the state, but what i know for sure is that its continuous recruitment.

strangely enough theres a high turnover rate in corrections. good luck

Their is usually no shortage of of need for Corrections officers..It shouldn't be a problem..but careful of what you ask for..I know people who have worked there and they have seen some pretty sick and perverted ****..especially directed at female corrections officers..but good luck to you..go to the state page or state corrections page and you should be able to find something

The Guy in the City

You should first have experience working with adolescents who are troubled. You can work in a residential treatment center. These are places where teens stay from a week to many months. They have various issues. As a youth counselor (psych technician) you do activities with them that help them with their issues and you talk to them about things. You can check Craigslist and look in the Jobs section under non profit.

Typically you need a 4 year degree but sometimes if you have prior experience working with teens these places might hire you. If you have no experience yet, a lot of these treatment centers look for volunteers so you could intern for a while and build up experience.

There are few state prisons for youths and they are normally in rural areas. You apply to the state department of corrections.
Locally it is usually the county sheriff that runs the juvenile halls, where kids usually go. You look up your local sheriff and apply.
Some states you have to go to an academy first and then apply, most states you apply to the sheriffs department and if they hire you they either train you or they send you to an academy.
The academy for corrections is normally shorter that that for police.
