All are Law Enforcement Officers, and for the most part have the following responcibilities:
Sheriffs- County Police, that provide basic police and investigatory services for unincorporated area, or cities that contract for services who don’t have their own police forces.
Marshals- usually a judicial position, Federal Marshals provide security to Federal Courts, apprehend fugitives and transport federal prisoners. City Marshals provide similar services for city courts.
Constables- (Texas has the most Constables) In Texas they are a county police that serves legal process for the courts, they may also contract with other Governmental Agencies to provide police services (School Districts, Parks, County buildings, ect.)
Police Officer- Basic term for Law Enforcement Officers that provides basic police services for cities, universities, Air Ports, and any type of governmental organization.
Agent- Usually an investigatory/ detective position with a State or Federal agency that provides special or specific enforcement services. Examples are; FBI, DEA, Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement, California Bureau of Investigation, State Attorney Generals Office, ect. |
