There really isn't any difference. They can both be defined in the same manner. The term "unlawful" seems to be used more in the written wording of the statutes. As in, "It shall be unlawfull to...." We seem to use the word "illegal" more in conversation. But, both mean a thing or act which is contrary to the form of the statutes, or laws....

They are the same. The term unlawful tends to be used in non criminal law like employment tribunals, but they still mean the same thing.
A coroners court might pass a judgement of unlawful killing rather than murder where no one individual is guilty, but it is still illegal.

illegal means forbidden by law or statute

Basically they have the same meaning.
