In the US, there is no law requiring you to carry ID.
However, most people do, because it is convenient.
If you don't have ID, and you are accused of a crime, they will take you to the police station and identify you. |

America does not require any of it's citizenry to carry any form of identification. Most of us do carry identification for convenience-sake so that if we are stopped or involved in any activity, we can quickly prove who we are, what business we have, and move on. If someone chooses not to carry identification, they cannot cash checks, drive a car, sometimes not be able to purchase an item (Alcohol) and can be detained by police even for a minor infraction like jaywalking. The police can detain someone until the person can prove their identity if the police have just-cause. My advice, get a license or non-driver ID with a permanent address so whomever NEEDS to know who you are, at least you can prove it and move on. |
