What is the law regarding karate weapons?

I am training for my black belt in Hapkido/Aikido and of course there are several wooden weapons I am capable of using, including the baton and the nunchaku/rope stic, as well as the staff. They are not bladed weapons. Is it illegal to carry a nunchaku, for example? A police officer told me I can carry it as long as I am on the way to a class but can't carry it otherwise.

There are a number of weapons identified as illegal in the state of California. You can find them listed in the California Penal Code under 12020(a) PC.
Possession of such devices is considered a Felony. |

The only place you can have it in your car is in a locked trunk. Otherwise it's illegal. You can't walk around the street with them although if you're going from your car to practice I would assume that would be okay. |

Knighthawk is correct, many Karate weapons are considered deadly weapons and are a felony to possess. I would keep these items at home and when en route to class, transport them in the trunk. That is the safest route to take. If not, say for instance you are not en route to or from class and you are involved in some minor incident (road rage, t/c, etc.), it can become very major incident if those weapons were found. Just like baseball bats in some regards. I have seen trouble makers arrested for having a bat in the trunk, because they were not playing ball and had no valid reason for that bat in the trunk other than possessing it as a weapon. |

No, because if u are caught with it they can consider it a concealed weapon. Probably best to keep it at home. |
