Drugs, cocaine and meth are primary sources, more notably, crack. People addicted to these 2 drugs are the source of more crimes because they will do anything to get more. |

A professor at the University of Chicago named Levitt has proved, using statistical analysis, that the single factor which correlates best with crime is unwanted childbirth. There is no longer any serious debate over this conclusion. The more children born to mothers that don't really want to have children, the higher the incidence of most common street crimes, including homicide. There are other factors, but this is the most influential. |

Laziness and greed. I want what you have but I am too lazy to work for it. In order to get what you have quickly, I decide to take yours and make it mine. If you get in my way, sorry you're dead. |

Illegal drugs, their addiction, and the subsequent drug trade that results. Money truly is the root of all evil and since there is a market to sell illegal drugs (at a tremendous profit mind you) there are those who will sell the drugs. The addicts have physical and/or psychological dependency on the drugs and may go to very extreme lengths to buy the drugs.
Some will commit crime to get money to directly buy drugs. Others will act very irresponsibly and find their lives ruined and resort to crime in desperation. Still others will act very calously when under the influence of the drugs and commit crime, even violent crime, when they would otherwise be very gentle people. |

Everything in the preceding questions is relevant to an extent. However there are factors that eliminate each of them. Drugs, why is there crime in cultures without drugs? Poverty, why are there honest poor people? Too many siblings, education, etc. The basis of all crime is knowing you are breaking the law and not caring that you are. This can be caused by all of the reasons stated, but does not explain the callousness for the criminal act itself. We have educated, urbane, criminals, who lacked nothing in their lives. No the cause for crime is a complete disregard for the other person and the laws and institutions we have put together as a society. I can find this attitude among lots of the young and disenfranchised, but I can find it a lot of other places also. If you would rather benefit at the expense of others, then you have a criminal tendency and have taken the first step. |

Indifference. In one way, indifference to the punishment, as many criminals prefer prison to day to day struggle, they simply don't care about themselves or anyone else, and offering them a better life won't change their stereotypical placement, their value, or their way of life.
In another way, society's indifference too, as many fall into the cracks of the legal system and receive no alternative, no counseling, no reason to improve. The saddest thing about crime is knowing that most crimes and punishment do not work well together; those who commit serious crimes receive lighter sentences than those who are being made an "example" out of, those who can reform but will never see the light of day to do so. |

Drugs, gambling addictions and women. Not necessarily in that order but those are the top three excuses in almost every level of criminal activity from street thugs to white color criminals. |

18 years after Roe v. Wade, the crime rate began to drop significantly. Unwanted / unloved children are much more likely to turn to crime. So make sure your kids know you love and appreciate them! |
