First you need to define "murder capital". Are you referring to sheer number of murders, or murders as a percentage of population, do you consider all murders or only first-degree murders or stranger murders, or exclude domestic disputes, or exclude justifiable homicides such as self-defense, or what constitutes a "murder capital"? |

In 2007, it looks like Detroit "top honors" in the murder capital category.
One observer said two of the major factors in increasing murder rates is the growth of gangs and an increasing tendency of young people to resolve their differences with guns instead of fists. |

It changes from year to year. All the good stats are at fbi.gov
One year I worked homicide in what the papers called the murder capital that year, but it wasn't, The papers used the raw numbers and not the number of murders per 100,000 persons (rate), a fairer comparison. |

In the 70's it was Detroit
In the 80's it was Washington D.C.
In the 90's it was Los Angeles
We are still in the 2000's, so I don't know yet. |
