3 points on your licence and a fine of around £60..i think its similar to speeding... |

It's normally 3 points on your licence and £60 fine. If you were doing 17 mph and at the point when the picture was taken you'd gone through red, you would have had plenty of time to stop when the lights were amber. An amber traffic light actually means STOP, so if you keep going in hope you can get through before the red light, like it or not, I'm afraid the authorities are quite justified in prosecuting you. |

not sure but think yourself lucky you didnt get the worst penalty possible, death!
Just be more observant of amber lights in future, you not only risk you life by jumping red lights but there could have been a pedestrian crossing, possibly a child! |

Probz 3 points and 40/60 fine, thats if you are uk? |

In England - £60 fine and 3 points on your licence.
The camera is triggered by the red light, so saying you went through on amber won't wash I'm afraid...
If you don't pay the fixed penalty it will be registered against you as a fine of £90, so unless you wish to plead 'not guilty', which is your right but few people win as the photographic evidence is pretty compelling, you should pay up and learn from the experience.

The ultimate penalty can be death, but most likely £60 with 3 points |

It can be as little as $25 to as much as $200, depending on where the offense occured. I had a tickey for doing that about two years ago, and I had to pay $135. |

Everyone that has answered you so far appears to be in the UK but I believe you are in the USA.
If this is the case you are looking at a moving traffic violation. I haven't had a ticket in a very long time but it used to be around $100.00
It also means you have points on your record and could me an increase in your car insurance.
You said you got a letter? A police officer didn't pull you over? If this is the case then you were caught by a traffic cam. If you were caught by a traffic cam then I can't see much point in trying to fight it.
Another possibility is someone might be trying to scam you out of money. First if you are in the USA or Canada check out this web site to get you a top rate law firm:

This letter should have an address of where to send your fine or where to appear in court. You might want to go there before your court date to see if there actually is a ticket in your name. |

I got done recently in NC. $50 penalty, no points on license, no insurance penalties and a lesson learnt very cheaply. |

You will have been caught by a camera that only takes pictures after the red light is on.
If you accept it you'll probably just get 3 points and £60 fine, if you do not accept it and go to court, they will produce the photograph and you'll end up paying about £200 and might get more than 3 points. |

I did this about 10 years ago - no excuses, it was poor driving and a massive misjudgment. I got 3 points on my licence and a fixed penalty fine, then £32, now £80, I think.
Mind you, I think being polite and reasonable with the traffic cop who stopped me probably stopped it going to court - it was bad enough for a 'careless driving' charge or worse. |

the penalty is 60 pounds and three points the lights must have changed to red to activate the camera no point in fighting it unless there was no stop bar painted on the road there road marking regulations state that a stop bar must be applied on the road at every traffic light otherwise the light is not legal |

In around 14 days (depends on the authority) you will receive a notice of prosecution. You can either accept a fixed penalty (was £30) and 3 points on your licence.
Or you can challenge the notice in court. If you loose you will be liable to an increased fine (possibly) and the costs of the case. |

Amber also means stop,,you should never rush up to a green signal,,coz it could turn amber then red,,as in your case,,ok Firing Squad at dawn,,too harsh? ok 3 points and a nice little fine,,just what you needed before Father Christmas comes round |

3 points and a fine. Should be around £60. You may be given the oppertunity to go to a road awareness day. Basically get told off in front of other people and they don't put the points on your licence |

Depending on where you reside at and how many offenses you have ( which you say are none ) then you will get a mark on your license possibly ( no guarantee ) but you will have to pay the fine and go to court for sure. |

The penalty is the truck you hit in the middle of the lights.
You should travel at a speed which will enable you to stop in an emergency.
Imagne if it wasn't a truck going through the green on the other side of your red light but a single mum and her 6 kids and you hit them all.
Think you could live with that? I know I couldn't |

i think you should be prosecuted...what if a mother and children was starting to walk across the road when you went through on red....a fine would then be the least of your problems.. |
