I have never heard of it being controversial...

I have higher education, I work with officers, most of whom have college degrees and several have their master's degree and a few even have their PhD. Where did you get the impression that police officers with a higher education was controversial?

Police work isn't just slapping hand cuffs on people and shooting guns. It is far more than that. The ability to communicate is highly important in our job. Whether it is verbal communication with citizens or articulation while testifying in court, verbal communication is of great importantance to police officers. Written communication is just as important. The ability to write down the events of a case and document what occurred is critical.

To be a good police officer also involves the knowledge of vast amounts of laws and the court cases which support the actions you take. The ability to read and comprehend these cases is extremely important. Although natural instinct is just that, officers who have proven their ability to do well in school often are intelligent and often have the natural instinct to be a good police officer.
